no, i want to have a short cut on the desktop or similar for easy access to programs, email etc. i have it on my other computer with version vista, but this is for a notebook with xp. sorry, i didn't make it clear. thanks bananas

Right click on the relevent program in the start menu and there should be an option pin to taskbar or send to desktop, create shortcut

It's not a program, but rather a service that you access through your browser or email program.

If you read your mail through a browser, you'll need to create a shortcut .
with the following line when asked for the location of the item exactly as shown.

"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" mail.yahoo.com

You'll be asked for your username & password initially. If you save the password, it should log you on each time right at your inbox.
