Windows XP Home SP3 and updates for SP2
Need some advice please.

If I am running Windows XP Home Edition SP3, do I need to install the neverending updates for Windows XP SP2?
I use Custom Install rather than the 'forced' install option.

Sometimes these windows updates will not install properly even after 2 or 3 attempts and in the end, I tick the option to not install.

So are SP2 updates really necessary for the SP3 OS?

Thanks in advance.

You can install SP3 anytime without having to update SP2. In fact, you can install SP3 without having to install SP2.

Thanks, Bananas.
SP3 was installed with Windows XP almost 3 years ago on a new PC but it just confuses me when I am notified of an update for SP2.

So now I can happily ignore the updates for SP2

Thanks again.

You shouldn't be getting updates for SP2, as you are using SP3. I've never had windows XP tell me the updates were for any service packs. A service pack is collection of updates, fixes or enhancements. Windows makes note of the SP you have installed, and will issue you with updates for the appropriate version for the SP you are using. Can you post a picture of windows telling that the updates are for SP2? Are you running a legit version of XP?

I'm running SP3, and I cannot see where XP is telling me that the updates are for a certain SP.

I think I know now where you are getting confused. The updates in question: Would they be for .Net framework, which have their own service packs?

Re last question: yes, they had .net framework in the wording.
I also have some of the .net framework updates in my Add/Remove programs list.

Framework 2 SP2 - framework 3 SP2 - framework 3.5 SP1

I don't have a photobucket account to upload a photo but all those updates in your photo have just been downloaded and installed.

So the .net framework updates are different to the normal windows updates?

.Net is a system library for windows, that just happens to support different programming languages. It is optional, that is Windows doesn't rely on it to run, so it's your choice whether you want to install it. But like a lot of software out there, they have their own service packs. .Net changes all the time, so it's easier for Microsoft to release major changes in the form of a service pack. In that sense, seeing as it's an optional software package, yes, it is different to the normal windows updates. When windows update offers a new update, they will tack onto the description for .net stuff (as well as office and others) what version SP the update will be for.

If you right click My Computer and select properties, a window will pop up showing you what Service Pack version windows XP is running.
