Windows Vista / XP or 98
Hi
I have Vista on my laptop and have hated it since day one
I do have XP  disk  as well as 98

Can I replace Vista with XP or 98  legally
I do own the 98 & XP discs ( legally- not fakes or copies or anything naughty )

I "believe"  I am allowed to load the XP onto one other computer- the tower it was on "went"  and I no longer have the XP on anything
same with the 98

Is it better to load the Windows 98 or Windows XP onto my laptop instead of Vista & should I do a Copy of the Vista " in case "  I muck it up?

I have had NOTHING but trouble with it since day one ( 2007 ) and am fed up with it - It is slow - so slow
I do not have music or vidoes on the laptop
I was STUNNED  the day I turned it on & it took longer to load then my XP tower
it's full of "stuff" I don't need or use

The other thing is - will this then cause problem using this site & other sites ( like F/B etc )

OR
should I just uninstall Internet Explorer and use google chrome & firefox
yesterday ( example) I'm trying to use the internet and it keeps freezing
I discover the cmputers "searched for updates" ( even though I asked it not to ) and says there's 14mbs of downloads for Vista
I just got rid of of 100's of MBs to try and make it faster
Have removed ALL photos and all documents and still slow

any ideas would be great :-)

I do a clean up disk- disk defrag and bought one of those  " register booster" and "system tweek "  things to free up
more space - so, have done that :-)

cheers & thanks in advance

Hi Hobals would you not think about upgrading to Windows 7? I  went from XP,  didnt want Vista,  straight to Windows 7 and have had no problems.

I also have only ever used Internet Explorer again with no Problems.

Cant see why you cant downgrade if you wish to as long as you hold the original disk.

Window 98 isnt supported now (by microsoft)  i dont think it has been since 2006 and XP is only supported to 2014.

Thanks Kiwi :-)
I have been "given"  a windows 7 but scared to use it as unsure if it's "real"
I only just saw my windows 98 disc and thought I'd ask

I have the XP and the XP series 2 ( or somethinbg like that ) which Microsoft USA posted to me ( had to pay extra)
it is suppose to save you downloading updates etc

I've got approx 120GBs and have used 80 and it is soooooooooooo slow
I have no pictures- no music- no documents- out them all onto flash drives and still slow

it was slow from day one - why I thought it would get faster - ???? ( anyones guess how my mind works- ha ha )

I have heard good things about windows 7 - it's just the expense of buying it -

I might try my warranty on the laptop- as the CD wont work and I got an extended warranty
it wont open any CD or DVD that's copied- only new ones

I was told that if anything happened- they'd replace it ( cheaper than fixing) - so maybe that's the go :-)
Thanks again Kiwi

cheers :-)
ps
( I got the OK on the charity- Just waiting for them to give me a document - so all is OK etc - I'll let you know )

If your vista is legal and you own the disc get in touch with microsoft, they upgraded my Daughters and Granddaughters lap tops to Windows 7 for free, both computers were only a few months old when they changed from Vista to Windows 7.

Go with XP.
98 is a bit old now XP is better.
Vista I'm not keen on.
Windows 7 is ok to instal if you know what you are doing.
I have heard of ppl having too many problems when they go from vista to 7. but I have not tried.
my laptop has two opperating systems on it.. xp and vista I want the vista taken off.

A lot of your problems are probably from NOT installing all the Vista updates.  By not installing them can cause a computer to slow down and cause programs to freeze.  The updates fix issues with instability and security issues.  Its worth installing them to see if it fixes your problems.

You will still need Internet Explorer on the computer to do all the necessary microsoft updates (they won't download with Firefox or similar).

Is your XP program an Update Upgrade or Full program??  I believe you cannot roll back to XP with only an Update Upgrade disk as you need to do a clean install.

hi,  i suggest install the operating system version that  the original oem license is , then either upgrade using an upgrade license or downgrade if supported using a stand-alone (non-oem) license
Win98 is not viable if you want internet access due to security holes and lack of application program support

Hi , you can uninstall "stuff" (application programs) that you do not require via add/remove
If your laptop was bundled with security programs  which you do not use then run the applicable removal tool - even if  program has been previoulsy uninstalled
If you have security programs installed that are user manually launched only with no resident background scanner component you can disable quick launch component via
start > run : enter :   msconfig
consult start up list ( for programs launched at computer booting)
uncheck target programs : apply , restart

then access admistrative tools via control panel
component services >  services (local)
maximise window
scroll down to target program
double click to open properties
drop down options for start up type
select manual
consult service status
click STOP if running to stop program potentially running in background
apply , ok
Only do this for security programs that are user manually launched only - such as many freeware antipspyware programs
