What's the best TV you can buy for around a grand?
hi all

my old mitsu 68cm TV died on me the other day, and looking at buying a new one
(want the best)
i have no idea on.. whats available and, i'm not up todate with the latest in technology

i don't want anything smaller than 80cm, so far i know i should get digital HD LCD screen
& not sure of brand
are there other features i should know about and get?
(always wondered what is the difference between LCD and plasma too?)

thanks

We have a Samsung Plasma - good brand - and the only reason I got the plasma over the lcd is because it looked better to my very bad eyes lol

My son could go into a long explaination of the difference, but it is just personal preference to me.

I am interested in the answers to this question as I have been thinking of upgrading from my old reliable 15" black and white Astor for some time now, For years I have been using that plastic thingy you put in front of the screen that has three colours but no matter what they said when I bought it in 1962 it doesn't really look like real colour.

Also I suspect I will find it difficult to replace the valves the next time it breaks down. Time to upgrade I reckon, but the only certainty is the new set will definitely be a colour one, maybe even with a remote control thingy

ohhh spade you crack me up...lol
with tv's it is all a matter of what is best for you.
some go for Plasma others go for LCD.
I choose LCD.
I bought a brand I had never heard of coz they offered 5 yrs in home replacement/service. to offer that they would have to have confidence in their product...or... done a runner after selling X amount?
I bought a Hisence about 3.5 yrs ago...so for...no problems.
tv's are cheaper now then ever.
also technology has improved so you can't really go wrong IMO.

Here's a couple of things to consider................

Screen size - The larger the screen - the further back you need to sit (make sure you have room)
Plasma = more power consumption than LCD (or LCD/LED)
LCD over say 50inches seem to have a little problem with backlighting as far I'm concerned.
LCD should last longer than Plasma
Best to get a FULL HD screen resolution (ie 1920 x 1080)
You will see various types of HD bandied about.  In general, if you've never had a big screen before, you really won't care which one you get.............until something pops up later down the track requiring the better quality.  Personally, I would try and stick the the higher specs (ie 1920 x 1080)

As mentioned, most will have options such as USB playing, PVR recording to USB stick or HDD, wireless networking etc

Get as many options as you can for the dollar.

If power consumption is important for you , then you can get an idea of the running costs for the various models from this site. www.energyrating.gov.au/appsearch/

"Screen size - The larger the screen - the further back you need to sit (make sure you have room)"

I suspect the opposite is also true, that is why when I am watching TV I can rest my cup of tea on top of the TV and reach it without hardly leaning forward at all

@ spade

tvseries - good tips there
i'm thinking about a grand because my sister wants to upgrade too (that's her budjet), so i could also look into buying two at a discount.
was just a thought tho. I am able to spend more.

edit - oh! you edited your post tvseries, but you know now.. i'm not limited to a grand.

I would also say Samsung as that is what we have. I would go for LCD (do not remember what the difference is, was told once, maybe it was reactiontime of the pixels...sorry am not good at these technical things), although there is an upgrade for LCD now but I also forgot that name (Oh I am so brain dead).

Make sure that you see it in action and not a dvd but normal tv. Good luck.

That'll teach you to be a cheapskate, spade. You should have bought a Pye Pedigree ......
Mine has all the colours .... every shade of grey you can imagine plus the black & the white ......

                                                            You can rely on Pye

Some people complain about screen "burn in" with Plasma's, although mine has never had an issue yet (approx 4 years).  It seems to mostly occur with heavy usage of video gaming - Playstation & the like, but I'm not into that.

I like Plasma because it still seems to have better blacks and brighter picture.

I would go minimum 50 inch of whatever type you choose.

Best advice for buying any TV is go into somewhere like harvey normans or such and look at what size and picture quality you like ... its pointless naming brands until you have seen them for yourself.

I have a sony bravia HD LCD and a Hitachi HD plasma ... both have their good and bad points .... plasma is probably better for sports etc where as I find the bravia is much better for watching bluray movies ....

no point launching into technical specs because most people dont care about them ...they just want something that has a great picture and sound (sound is important aswell as picture) and to be able to plug in their DVD player, game console etc

Again its all down to personal preference - what might suit you might not suit someone else

Also depends on what size room your going to be keeping it in....some have small living rooms etc and dont realise a big screen plasma can generate quite a bit of heat and make the room uncomfortable...I know...sounds picky but just one more thing to take into account.

Hope thats been of some help :o)
