we are spoiled today
On another site , a seller had for auction 1950 jewelry found in a salesman's bag which they had purchased. all items were securely sewn into the bag so were unused
The seller started bidding at $2.00 and $5.00 dollars for brooches and $10.00 for necklaces
Now the 1950 prices for these items were from 12/6 to 35 pounds, pre -decimal money
These were only fashion pieces. The amount in relation to the average wage was astronomical

too true. prices have come down a lot.
I think most jewelry back then was called "paste" it was the way it was made, the diamond looking stones did look good I had some as a child and still have some but the gold/silver colour metal always went black or bits of metal flakes off.

So true !!! The pieces I import from Mexico, sth America and especially Bali are so well made And price the price is wonderful !!! My mother often get be to take pieces off my neck.. And she gives them a good going over... And is amazed at the cheaper price points!

She worked in a fashion house in the late 50's and 60's... So is very familiar on prices etc of jeweler back then.

Ok just got off the phone with mum.

My mum paid 3.5 for rent when they came in 1956. Her wages were 6 pounds as she was under age as age puts it. When she was over 20... She was paid 12 pounds.

late 60's I started work I earned 4 pound 10 shillings
I had to give Mum 3 pound for board. the rest was for my clothes and entertainment. 2/6 was half a crown = about 40c
35 pounds = about $45.00.
I remember seeing my Dad's wages packet with overtime he brought home 14 pounds he was a joiner.
