TRICKS OF THE TRADE - MAKING THE MOST OF SPOTD!
This week's thread is all about making the most of the two posts per day we are allowed to post in SPOTD.

First for the real newbies, the basics:-

What is SPOTD?     It's a forum called Sellers Pick Of The Day and it is designed to provide a place for sellers to advertise their items (specific specials or just general listings) twice a day.

Timing?  Twice a day means twice in any 24 hr period, that means when you post in Spotd you can't have posted more than once in the previous 24 hr period.  In other words if you posted Monday at 9am and then Monday at 4pm, you would not be able to post again until Tuesday after 9am.

Now, some of our more seasoned SPOTD posters, tell us your tips for making the most of SPOTD!

View Seller's Items

be quirky with your header and have clear instruction in the body of the ad, have the item number if you only are selling the one item photo's do help as well.
Replied by rococo on 02-Sep-2007 20:32 (Ref 737270) Report
Choose a couple of items to feature in your ad instead of "begging" for people to buy something off you, or by telling people you haven't had a sale in two weeks, is not a good way to attract buyers.  Also use "keywords" to describe your item, with a link going directly to the items you are promoting.  Good luck!!

Hi.
I am not a seller, but as a buyer ( new member ) I can tell you what I look for in these Spotd ads.

Your main selling items in title eg. -  All clothing, books discounted. Limited time.
If you are discounting prices / combining postage put that in the title eg - All clothing, books discounted 10%. I combine postage too.
If you are having a sale / discount period mention times / dates in the ad too eg - All clothing, books discouned by 10%. Sale ends Sunday 10pm. We combine postage.
Everyone loves pictures. In your post you may want to include pictures of some of your items.

I think spotd ads are great. I read them every time I come to oztion. I am a buyer who :

1. Loves to browse all different categories until I find something that catches my eye.
2. Likes to find exactly what I am looking for if I am after something specific.
3. Loves a bargain.
4. Loves to support oztion sellers.

Hope this helps :-)

Gday all - hope everyone is well

Good work admin, nice way to help out people here.

Thanks to bargain-hunter yr advice is much appreciated.

In the title I try to gain some attention whilst also referring to my items - eg Looking for a Romance?... try my books!  or LICK IT!! (stamps)  but also go the approach bargain-hunter reccomends -eg. Prices Reduced on Books - Combine Postage.

Its hard to say how much SPOTD helps but anyway we can grab some attention and highlight our tems and Oztion is a good thing.

all the best

I havne't been real successful with SPOTD  as far as sales .

However my one bit of advice is to vary the times that you place your post to try and attract other buyers from a different time slot - as many buyers do not scoll back past page 1.

I find using quirky attention grabbing headings seem to get the most clicks, and... it really is a lot of fun making them up.
If you approach it with a sense of fun, not dread, the ad is much more positive and people seem to look more.

hi,ive been buying and selling for a while now
and i try to let buyers know that business is doing well.
if you are selling great then others will check

your listings.i try to add a few pics and that i combine postage.its not always easy
to pick just a few items to put in spotd,so i pick a catergory
like tonight i picked dora the explorer, cause i have more than 10
items for that,it makes the spotd work better for you if you have
lots of the items in the main spotd.thanks and goodluck to all.nat.

As one of the 'Seasoned' Jewellery Sellers here I would be happy to offer a few tips

1: A catchy title.
No rights or wrongs here.  As quite a few members will tell you, I tend to make up weird and wacky titles, when the mood hits me. But hey... it works ;)

2: Different time slots.

3: Make sure to include a few of your better photos, special offers & links to your auctions.  Quite often buyers cannot be bothered scrolling through 20 pages of listings.

When posting in SPOTD, check the wanted posts from the last day or so, see if you have something that recent buyers are looking for, you could post :
*similar,
*by the same author or type of book,
*for the same age of person asked for,
*same brand but different item,
*different colour,

Also check buyers feedback see what type of items are being bought.
Tell us when you have added new listings.
If someone has requested something in wanted, list it, they might not buy it, but someone else might, after all it has been advertised by you offering. Saying you have the item but it is not listed is off-puting, so before you reply to a wanted, list it.
If asked for a specific item in the wanted, eg, 'green work shirt' do not post about your 'blue work shirts, shorts', or the like, make a SPOTD with your similar item.

Have had some clicks so I know it will work for me. As advised I will place extra ads and make it daily.  I've taken in everyones advice and wish all happy selling. Cheers Maggie

Sellers, if you have a particular item you want to promote, try putting in a picture link to it.
I's very simple....all you have to do is copy and paste the pic on your selling page
(highlight < Control c < Control v)

It saves buyers having to wade through all your items just to find the one you are mentioning.  And is a great way for buyers to see your item !

The title is the most important thing.  Make sure it stands out.  Also include additional photos with your listings.  You can even post replies with additional photos.  Good luck everyone!

I have recently found how SPOTD works for me
  • Catchy titles might get you clicks but not people who are really interested in your items.
  • I've found if I pick one item and advertise it in the title then add a picture and a link to the item there is a higher chance it sells.
  • I might click on a catchy title just to see what the OP has written inside but if I am looking for a certain item and someone has in there title free postage on black top etc then I will click and go to their listings
Remember it's not the clicks that count it's the sales you only need 1 click to get a sale!!

Something very important, to myself at least, is spelling/punctuation/grammar. You can have sensational items and catchy titles till the cows come home, however, if there are numerous spelling mistakes, no punctuation and poor grammar it makes me wonder whether you'd take as much care with the stuff I buy from you, as with your spelling.

Please don't beg buyers to buy from you - this put's me off.
Always stay happy and positive.
Definetly provide pics as already mentioned and if you are running any special promotions let people know. These have helped my sales sky rocket.
Thank you and have a terrific day,
Zoe

Hi again, don't worry, I've worked it out.
To signaturescent,
you right click the picture on your sale page and go  COPY   then
open the post a message in SPOTD, write your message
then go right click PASTE and your picture goes in. The link seems to happen automatically at least it did for me.
Does this seem a long way to do it or is this it ?

I have yet to find what really works for me, but I try not to bombard SPOTD every day as if you post too frequently it can be misconstrued as being pushy, well to some anyway.
I just keep plodding along, make sure my posts are current and trust in the fact that not everyone wants what I am selling, but someone somewhere will want it.
Admin: I also feel that twice a day is too much, it fills the first page too quickly, if it was only once a day then sellers would be very selective and creative in what they do post, just my thought anyway.

OK, we open a new thread, put in our header, then write in the body of the post, then how do we keep it open while we fetch  our photos from our auction site ?????????

hi miss-hokey-pokey,
sorry it's been a while since i've looked here, but the way i got my pics on using a mac and firefox, was to have two windows open. the second one being the page with the links to all your pics.
Then copy the link (on my laptop it's ctr & mouse button) then select copy picture address.
Open your first window (SPOTD ad) press green picture icon (the 11th button from left). Copy the pic address into source box, enter other info if needed.
ANyway, that's how I got it done!
Hope this helps

Make use of the new Oztion seller tool 'Adget'.  It will save you a lot of time in preparing a post for spotd.

You can display a great amount of your selling items with a simple copy & paste.

Here is a link to a site that will help you get even more from your Adget and Spotd posts.

Check it out, you can even build a category search function into your adget display.

Your spotd post can be up to 7 columns of items sorted into 7 different categories.

Hi everyone.
I'm new here and I love OZtion.
After selling nothing in my first week, I found this SPOTD.
I added my own SPOTD, and got about 20 hits!
I made my first sale, which I believe came from here. I was extactic.
I think it is a great way to see what people are selling, without having to go through all the catagories!
Well done OZtion!

Hi,

I think spotd is a great idea and use it all the time, the only problem is I found it by accident, I had no idea it existed.

I don't get very many lookers to posts and wonder if buyers have any idea it is here either, sometimes I wonder if other sellers are the only people that glance at my post when posting their own.

This is great but if they are like me they are there primarily to make money not spend it!

Maybe a bigger feature on the home page for buyers to view would get more business to our advertisements.

Just a thought, Jenny

HI shoestring, I'm not sure how to put individual pics in, but you can do an adtion, which is like a showcase of your wares - I think there is an adtion thingy at the bottom of your 'my selling' page. Click on that and follow the prompts then cut and paste it into your spotd. cheers, Linda

Put particular items in the heading....as these show up in google when searched.
eg. I put "Rusty Springs, The OC dvds etc"...if someone is looking for these items via google they show up near the top of google search. (sometimes)
And use ADget, that way if anyone looks at your spotd ad, they can see alot of your items and easily click on anything that is of interest.
That's about it.
