to clear up some mineral makeup rumors
Hi all, there seems to be a lot of so called "facts" and myths about mineral makeups. Theres lots of brands claiming everything about mineral makeup, mainly the chemical free and natural/organic fluff.
I am NOT a cosmetics chemist, but i chat quite often with one who know a lot about this subject.
THe terms chemical free is a myth, and is made up by a marketing company to promote sales.
The term "natural" has no regulation, so any brand can claim to be producing "natural" makeup, even though it may contain just 1% natural origin, same goes witht he term "organic" particularly in makeup, there are no standards unlike the food industry.
Titanium dioxide is indeed a chemical, it is a sunscreen and pretty non reactive to skin however.
Mica is also a chemical, you can see mica in any rock and fossil museum. It gives makeup a pretty shimmer.
The color in mineral makeup is also made up with chemicals, yellow oxides, blue oxides and red oxides, the origin of these colors is pretty interesting. Please read the link to "realize beauty" realizebeauty.wordpress.com/2009/03/19/whats-the-deal-with-mineral-make-up/

By no way, am i knocking mineral makeup. or its sellers on here. I have used quite a few different mineral makeups, and they do look nice, however, it make take you some time to weed out what looks good on you, and what doesn't.

Absolutely everything in this world is made from chemicals.  What you need to determine is whether it is a naturally occuring chemical or a laboratory created chemical.  Natural does not mean better neither does organic mean its better.

The term Natural in cosmetics may only mean that it "looks" natural.

Mica is a naturally occuring substance but is refined through processes - so is it natural or created?

Oxides are also natural colour pigments that also need to go through a refining process.

If you knew how most makeup was made you probably would opt not to ever put it on your skin.

Mineral makeup has good brands but now lots of cheap imitations that are not pure are finding their way on the market.

Don't get me started on the new nano technology they are now adding to some skincare products - they do not know what long term genetic effects/damage they will do to people because they don't need to pass any kind of testing.  The damage they have hinted at may be generational in nature and cause birth defects due to chromosonal changes.

Just my 2cents worth.

no worries nefer. As mentioned in the article, many natural pigments, are well, lets just say.YUK. To get a natural yellow pigment, they feed cows mangos, and their pee turns whats underneath yellow, and that pigment is used in lots of natural makeup. Some luminous pigments are composed of crushed fish scale, and some other pigments used in mineral makeup are from boiling a certain beetles wings. And yes, the process of refining minerals is quite a huge process.
Realize beauty also has trialed the nano sunscreens to see what is absorbed by the body, and the results are interesting, have a read, shes an interesting lady, with a great deal of knowledge that she puts into simple terms, so even a lay person can understand it!

So the term "scraping it off with a pitchfork" has some credence after all...

I've never worn the stuff, never even used a moisturiser, and I'm not about to start now.

you can easily get allergies to so called natural products, as you can man-made. If you get allergies, immediately stop using the product, and contact the manufacturer.
