Talk about postage pirates - Clothing sellers - WOW i cannot believe postage costs -???
just doing a little bit of looking for ladies clothing for me and my elderly mum this morning.

i dont know if any of you other lookers have found this as well but for a simple top short sleeves and no sleeves - postage $10.00 . i seriously cannot justify how some sellers can charge that much?? ps thats just normal postage as well
not express post or even registered.

Agreed...

I'd never charge that amount or for that matter pay that much for postage, gives other sellers on here a bad name :(

I do charge about 10c - $1.00 for envelopes/bubble wraps and or zip lock bags but $10.00 is a little extreme...

:)

I asked a seller a couple of years ago about postage for a skirt, staight cotton skirt. She had it marked at $25 postage , and I thought she must have made a typo................... but NO she informed me, and if I wanted it, she "supposed" she could discount it to $20 ....................... not @##$$$ likely

I'd never charge that much for a top, for jeans yes but not a top.
You've got to weigh up whether you want it or not though and the total price.  I paid $10 post for a singlet as it was quite rare and i really wanted it.  When the item came posted for about $1.70 i just wrote that in the sellers feedback.

Sellers can charge what they like , to a point I guess before they come under the excessive postage cost ruling . But some do this in the hope you'll fill up a satchel etc .

Just move on and find another seller , so many have a TOS or conditions that scare buyers away that maybe it leaves more buyers for sellers who offer a fair deal

A lot of the clothing sellers here are excellent  but clothing can be heavy enough to push a parcel over the 500 gram mark. Then usually ( with some exceptions) the next postage cost up if using satchels is $10.30 .

hey everyone thanks for the replies. i was really taken aback. and the thing is no they werent new sellers - yes it was more than 1 seller it was several.

i have been meaning to check this out - can sellers with excessive postage rates actually receive a warning - or anything like that.??

hope you are all enjoying this lovely new years weather.

Sellers with excessive postage rates can be reported , don't know if it helps at all though or at what point it is considered excessive. They are only doing themselves a disservice and will loose out on sales.

Sellers who balantaly list outside of OZtions Policies can be reported and Admin does take note , specially if there is more then one complaint.

or the top weighs over 500g in which case $10 is cheaper than the satchel to post it in?

I used to be nice and charge large letter rates for dolls clothes. Only took a bit of elastic to twist in the parcel and I was up for parcel rates at the PO which is quite a lot more. So now usually I'll charge parcel rates for dolls clothes because technically, theyr'e not a letter. I know you can post some as a letter but you can also get to the PO and find out you've just ripped yourself off $3 by being nice to someone.

I did re-assess one after sale the other day and decided that I could take the chance so altered the invoice to suit. Not here. Don't bother looking.

But like...........sometimes things aren't necessarily a rip off. Ask for weight first before you decide.

unless of course as sellers we're also meant to now be putting weight and measurements of packaged parcels in our descriptions?

Yup .posting clothing items as a large letter can bite you in the bum. Thought I had one of mine all nicely squashed and wrapped and under 20mm when apparently the multiple layers of glad-wrap re-inflated and I got a pay up more or else letter from AP

I really wish AP would put our a parcel satchels between the 500grm and 3kg one. A 1 kg would be perfect i think.

Perhaps you could ask the seller if s/he could send it more cheaply ...

Are all the items listed at $10 or just the heavier ones? Does the seller have bad feedback for postage costs? Maybe it was a mistake when listing, especially if 'sell similar' is used ...

I believe 'postage piracy' should be reserved for sellers who are really trying to avoid fees by decreasing the listing fee and increasing the postage .... i.e. $2 light item and $40 postage .... If the item weighs up to 500g it is going to cost $5.80 to send .... plus factoring packaging etc of, say $1, I don't think the extra $3.20 constitutes piracy .... If the overall price of the item + postage is too much is too much then don't buy ... but as feelin-couture mentioned, it's an individual thing ...

I was asked, by an experienced member. why I was charging her 10c more than the cost of postage, because, as she said, 'I know how much it costs to post things, you know' ....

Sometimes it makes you wonder doesn't it. I just move on. I bought a few items of a seller, not asking about combined postage, thinking at the worsed there would not be any discount. When I got the invoice, She charged more in combined postage than each of them would cost to post separate. I contacted the seller about this (and still paid as the difference was not that big so it was not worth the 'fight') and she said that was because combined was more and she had not changed the postage in her listings yet. WTF.

Items were nice but I could not get over the bit that she charged more than she should have. That is the opposite of combined postage. I got it in a 500 grams satchel and she could have posted in a envelope for $1.80 plus packaging. She would have known postage cost as she has sold enough to know the prices. She lost me as a return buyer though.

At least if you see the postage cost you can press the back button.

Agreed Kiwi there is such a demand for a 1kg one as often clothing can be just a tad over the 500g rate.

Was so glad when AP brought out the 5kg satchel too as i often have bulk lots to jam in there but lo and behold it was about a year before they actually realised they need a regular 5kg satchel and not just an EP 5kg.

The thing is though Willow, you might be able to post thin kids leggings as a large letter. I haven't tried but I don't doubt that you can.

But it only takes you to sell a pair for three dollars, charge a dollar twenty post then get hit at the PO for the extra three thirty five post because it's shifted inside the parcel to make you change your mind on that one.

Or receive a shredded pair of leggings your end because it shifted once in the hands of AP and the letter sorting machine ate it.  And yup plently will come in saying it never happened in all the years they've sold but it does happen, you've seen others talk about it happening to them so I doubt the stories are made up. And it might explain some of the "where did my letter/parcel go?" queries in here. Scrunched up in a torn mess with no identifiable packaging left on it?

Really, clothing should go as a parcel. Sellers are being nice trying to get it to you cheaper as a large letter. The fact that they're doing you a favour doesn't mean that the ones charging parcel rates are ripping you off. They're just charging what a seller should charge. And if a buyer knowingly says yeah let's risk sending that as a letter and then gets hit with a bill, or even worse, no parcel at the other end, then I think they have to chalk that one up to experience too.

I often find sellers who charge excess postage usually are selling items at low prices to avoid fees. A $2 item with $10 postage means less fees for the seller than a $10 item with $2 postage.

When posting thin clothing in envelopes, I always put a piece if thin solid cardboard so the envelope still flies thru the sorting machines without getting tangled . Marian

I once had pattern books arrive at their destination months after being posted with just a few tatters of the original packaging left. Packaging was two layers of Christmas paper turned inside out then sticky taped around in both directions to make sure it stayed flat and didn't split.

The buyer found my name and address in the mess and looked me up in the phonebook to ask who I was as they'd forgotten they even bought them and were wondering what the plastic envelope from AP full of torn Christmas paper was all about. Various stamps on the parcel told us it had travelled all over Australia, presumably because the original postcode and town had been destroyed, and then finally went to the real destination which was the state next door to where it came from.

I've been known to sew things into plastic sleeves to keep them flat. But if it's a maybe/maybe not situation I go for the parcel postage as quite often I lose money if I don't. Then if I'm wrong I just refund.

They do prefer only paper going through the sorting machines really.  Even coloured envelopes are a no no.  We often got asked when i worked there why the post shops sell coloured envelopes if they werent to go through the machines.  A question i could not really give a logical answer to other than perhaps they sold them for birthday cards that were to be given by hand lol

They must look on me as resident evil then as all my envelopes are yellow.

I tried to send clothing as express large letter once and got told noooooooo not acceptable which I found odd as they had no problem with it going as a normal large letter.

However, they have the power of the rubber stamp to say it's passed their inspection so I suppose arguing isn't really going to get me anywhere in the long run.

I'd heard all the stories of don't mark anything fragile or they'll take great delight in tossing it vigoursly around the sorting room. Had a truck (courier company) deliver a motor bike here with a helmet packaged separately. Driver went sifting through the rest of the truck looking for the helmet box. Tossed boxes from one end ot the truck to the other, well airborne. Saw the words "fragile" marked on quite a few.

yellow is ok as in standard yellow envelope just not those fluro ones you get with birthday cards it throws something out on the sorting machine reading sensor most likely to do with postcode boxes.

i once had the po lady run out after me calling out no we dont have a fragile service after i marked something fragile years ago when i first started online selling.  Also had one yell out noooo dont write on satchels in marker it will come off pfft permanent marker is the best thing for satchels as pen smudges and the people working there are illiterate and already struggle to read and deliver whats written on the parcel.

Hi
Every item has a REPORT button

If the item is being sent via Temando - the cheapest is around the $8.50 range
Check how the item is being sent- ask the seller to please explain the cost etc
or
Just click the report button and scroll down to EXCESSIVE POSTAGE

Admin will check EVERY ITEM that seller has & demand they alter the postage etc -
--  if they feel it is excessive   ---

They will have to explain it to admin how they come up with the price
- as a seller cannot try and make a "profit" from postage

admin here wont put up with that rubbish- fee evasion -
thank goodnes       BUT            they have to know about it BEFORE they can act on it
and they don't have enough staff & time to check every listing

which is why - IMO -  the report button is avaiable to every member on every listing

to help keep this site the best it can be and the seller maybe sending all items via Courier
which would mean around the $9 price range- if local

they might have done a "sell similar " and forgotten to alter the postage ( which I have done )

Or -- they may be sending via a Large Letter and trying to make a profit

- so, the best thing - IMO - is to ask the seller ( nicely )  and / or

- inform admin via the report button on that listing
you only have to report ONE of the sellers items for all to get checked ( according to the report )

cheers :-)
