And now they have just brought out a 3D one just to confuse us even more.

Have been trying to figure out the difference for quite a while now and all I know is some games play on one and not the other.

I cut and pasted your link above and came across some really usuefull information so thanks again.
The DSi has more features, so basically it is an updated version of the DS.
So i think i will go for the DSi for my mum who is turning 80.
Now i am going looking for the older arcade games for her and YES i will be shopping here.
Thanks again everyone.

I have heard that a lot of people are reporting headaches from the 3D one.

Here is a web site that compares the DS (Lite) and the DSi:
ds.about.com/od/nintendods101/tp/dsivsdslite.htm

and another that compares the DS, DS Lite , DSi and DSi XL:
ds.about.com/od/nintendods101/a/Choosing-A-Nintendo-Ds-Which-Ds-Should-You-Get.htm

Here is a summary:

DS Lite:

+ Cheapest of the lot
+ Backwards compatible with GBA
+ Huge support from 3rd parties (flashcarts included)
+ Battery life is good
- Only WEP security encryption
- No DSiWare and cannot run specific DSi Games
- No Cameras or SD card slot

DSi:
+ Slightly bigger screen
+ Cameras and SD Card slot
+ WPA security encryption
- Shortest battery life
- More expensive..
- No backwards compatibility

DSi XL:
+ Massively bigger screen
+ Better battery life than DSi
- Loss of portability in a sense due to screen size
Otherwise read as DSi

Definitely go for the DSi XL. My son has one and it is brilliant! Larger screen (especially good for 'older' eyes') and easy to use.
