Starcraft 2
My son wants Starcraft 2 for his birthday but I see that it requres an internet link and have told him "probably not" as I am concerned that our download will be exceeded.  Would this be the case?  We currently have a monthly download of 10G and that suits us fine (we barely use half that much).  I was told that the makers were going to make an internet connection required for "registering" the game upon starting to play but no more downloads would be necessary unless tha player requests it, again is this so?  I hope I am making myself clear as I have very little experience with computer games and that someone can help me. TIA

G'day Scottygirl,

I own and have played Starcraft for online purposes, I'm sure I can answer all the questions and concerns you have.

Even if you want to play Starcraft for the offline side of the game it will still require you to be connected to the internet, however playing online games is not an issue as it would probably use something like 5-10 mb per hour which is not a great deal.

What does use alot of your download limit is updates, games will often have patches to fix / change the game over the course of the games lifetime and older games will tend to have a large update to download prior to allowing the person to play the game.

Starcraft 2 however is very new to the market and the patches that have came out have been very subtle changes hence around 50-100mb is all that would be required to fully update the game enabling play.

You will need to "register" a Blizzard account called a Battle net account, this is just an online registration and has nothing to do with downloading, it's just like registering a new email address.

If you say you have roughly 4-5gb to spare of your internet your son won't be blowing that limit out by playing starcraft 2, you could play a game online all month and I doubt you'd go over 1.5 gb, for your son I doubt he's even use 500mb per month, depending of course of the amount time played.

So in conlcusion, online games use your internet downloads two ways ( not at the same time ), one is the intial update and future updates, depending on the game some updates can be 10-50 mb's each but are not that frequent, the other way is while playing the game online against other players ( this is known as Multi-player mode ) will use a small ongoing amount while you play, but it is very small.

It's a very enjoyable game and I'm sure your son will be wrapped to get his hands on it.

Hope that helps :)

correct, dont worry about online gaming blowing your data allowance, it doesnt use up all that much. It is mainly patches you have to download ... Oh yeah and Starcraft 2 is a great game, oh yeah and very addictive and time consuming. (you should see my housemate and he is 24)

oh yeah and to get the full game you have to buy it in 3 parts for the 3 seperate teams (zerg, protoss, terran) so dont be suprised if he asks for the same game again down the track lol, they know how to empty your wallet. at $100 a chapter/team/game that is $300 to get the full playing experiencelol
