Some info about is this ring?
Hi all,
I purchased a ring at a garage sale, here is the description:

It is a tiny coin (measures 10mm diameter)

On the obverse side is the Queens head and around the outside is written ; Elizabeth 11 Australia (and just underneath that, the word 'copy') 15 Dollars.

On the reverse side:

The Australian Nugget (and just under that is written 'Little Hero' 1890), 10 oz. 9999 Gold 1988.
This tiny coin has 16 diamonds (stones/chips?) around the outside

On the ring (the part that goes around your finger I mean :-) ) is written:
9K T and then a logo that I can't make out.
Does anyone know any history of this ring...I would be interested.

I will try to take a DECENT photo to post but haven't had much luck in getting it focused (even with the macro!)

Thanks very much.

B

I will also post this on the coins thread, someone there may also know its origins.

sounds like a tallar ring.
that is an intimation dollar coin placed in a ring.
I have an American one similar.

Don't focus in too close on the ring , just crop the image afterwards and that should give a clear shot.

And those 'diamonds' may not be diamonds at all..... But you won't be able to tell, except with a diamond-tester.

I have taken a couple of (very bad) photos but I can't figure out how to post them here.
I have them on my desktop at the moment...anyone here that can tell me how to post them?

Woops, I got a warning for cross posting...sorry Admin

Hi Manu...they are probably little pieces of chopped up glass or if I am especially lucky they will be CZ's :-D

and thanks  richbartim...I googled 'tallar ring' and some of the ones pictured are the same styling but with a different coin in the centre. There is one for sale in a UK auctionl titled Gents 9ct gold and CZ St George Coin Ring...it is 10mm larger but much the same styling.
I would like to know what the tiny 15 Dollar coin is though, even if it is a copy of a normal sized coin.

It is the same style richbartim but instead of mine being a St George Coin Ring it is a Queen Elizabeth11 15 Dollars ring.
Mine is 10mm in diameter and the  St George is 20mm if I remember correctly.
I will do some more Google-ing and see what I come up with (no luck so far though :-) )

it could be a gold dipped sixpence or threepenny piece the very old ones were round then they were hexagon shaped.

Ah yes - there are some good pics there!

I am wondering if it might be $15-worth of actual Gold.

I am going to ask a Learned Friend to have a look at this thread. If anyone knows anything about this one, he will.

 Hi B,
The ring is a 9 carat gold casting, so it would be safe to say it is an honest mark.
The coin is also honestly marked in as much it is labelled as a copy on the  face of the coin. It is definitely not 10 ounces as 10 ounces would weigh 310.1035 grams.
Many years ago coin rings were in fashion and various gold coins were were mounted into these rings. most of these coins were 9 carat rose gold to give the two tone effect.
It is illegal to reproduce minted coins unless the word copy is incorporated.
Looking at your photos you have a good 9 carat ring even though the coin is a minature reproduction.

Thank you Manu, some more info would be great...bummer it wasn't  10oz eh George ...it would weigh your finger down when you wore it ! (also would be worth a bit :-D )

I would still be interested in finding WHY the Australian Mint (if it was them) produced a miniature coin, and who was the manufacturer who made the ring.

Thanks again Manu and george for your helpful information.

 Hi again B,
the ring and coin were both produced by lost wax casting, and not by a mint. Perth mint stamped the original, collectors coins in 22 carat, not copies. All officially minted coin are not copies.

George is my Learned Friend! LOL
I asked him to have a look at this thread.
Pity it isn't 10oz!  But it's still a nice find for a garage sale.
