Shuts down whilst powering up
OK so my tower is in the shop, they've had it since Tuesday & still haven't touched it - getting mighty frustrated!

Just trying to get some idea as to what might be wrong & cost, or should I buy a new computer.

Hubby says that when he turned it on it started to power up and display the start up on the monitor but then it just shut down.

I know nothing about computers but am thinking to take it back from the trade name store and give it to a home based person to look at.

Can anyone advise (with the limited info) if this is a major job, or is the store I took it to just dragging their feet?

ps I'm in a country town, so it's not like the store is overloaded with customers

Hi there, i had an hp pavillian laptop until a few weeks back. A few months ago, It had started to play up and was doing the same thing. I did a system restore back about 2 months and it fixed the problem.

Hope this  helps?

Ive had a couple of towers do that over the years and its was the power supply both times

I agree - probably the power supply. Should cost no more than around $70-80 to replace it including labour.

Bugger, cant do a system restore whilst they have it

If it's only power issue I can live with that

but have been reading some stuff that says the mother board may be the issue

dont want to read anymore google answers, cos I'm getting lost...

Had same issue last year and it was the memory - it got fried.  Shop quoted $250 to fix it and I did it for $45.  I just had to buy new memory which I sourced on line.

My initial thoughts was that it was the power supply.

Could be a number of things , fan , power supply , something loose .

Were there any beeps ? If there were and you can recall how many , duration of beeps etc then you can have a Google for some of the causes.

could be power supply.. can you remember if you could still hear the fan working.? power supply s are about $45 I think that's how much mine was last year. you can prob find a video on how to instal on youtube.
when you get you pc back. open the case....look inside.. now what you are looking for is the Mother Board..it is the large flat thing that parts plug into..
now on that board are some posts that stick up.... look at the top of those.... do they look smooth? or.. with cracks on them? if cracks ..you need a new mother board might be cheaper buying a new PC.
or power supply.... fan not working... if you don't replace the power supply it will frazzle your pc as the pc if it keeps working will over heat.
hopefully Bananas will along soon to give you better advice.

Hi; A similar thing has happened to my tower twice now, it would start to power up & then just shut down. Each time it was the innards overheating due to dust & fluff buildup inside the case. Now I open the sides & give the innards an occasional vaccuum out & no problems! It saves me $45.00 which is what it cost each time the computer shop did it! Hopefully your problem is similar & as easily prevented in future.
