Scanner issue
It worked OK two days ago... but now I get a message which says:
Release the lock switch, detach the USB cable and reconnect.
Scanner driver will be closed.
Then it gives a button which says OK. When I hit that, another window comes up with:
There is a TWAIN error. Maybe the device is not connected.
The scanner is a CanonScan LIDE 20
I have disconnected, and reconnected it several times. I know it is connected, because you can hear it when I open ArcSoft PhotoStudio (the program).
I have also restarted the computer, to no avail.
Above it mentions something about a
lock switch
, but I have no idea what that is, and can't find anything like it.
Anyone have any idea what I should do.... I have urgent documents to scan.

Lifey, if the scanner is on, try opening your PAINT program. Under FILE choose FROM SCANNER OR CAMERA. Choose the device then click OK, it will then establish a connection and then it'll ask whether you want to PREVIEW, SCAN OR CANCEL. I click SCAN, then it'll scan and then you can save as a document and that can then be forwarded via email. Sorry I'm not sure how you can actually get it to print if that side of it isn't working.

The lock switch is found underneath the scanner at the front - the opposite end to the hinge. I have no idea why you'd need to unlock it if you haven't locked it. I think the lock switch is only there for when you're carting the scanner around, ie. to stop it opening - but not absolutely sure on that.

Thanks Nara and Dotkie.
I leave my computer on all the time, even overnight. It occasionally happens that when I get up, I have to put the pass word in, and then a message comes up that an update meant an automatic restart. (It is such a pain, as I have to find my web pages all over again, and it shuts emails I left open to attend to the next day.) Is there anyway I can stop all that from happening... or is it essential?
Anyway, that is what happened a couple of days ago. So could that have affected the way things work(ed)?
I could go into that link provided, and download the drivers, but then what happens to the drivers which are already on my computer. Do I have to uninstall them first? will they be overwritten? or will they just sit there taking up valuable space on my disk? I have never done any of this... is there anything I should look out for, or anything which I should definitely not do?
These things make me feel so uncomfortable.

Why don't you put your websites in your Favourites so you can find them again easily, or have them in the drop-down menu under the bar across the top (where the URL is - I think that's what it's called)?
If you need to deal with an email the next day, why not flag it or mark it as unread so it stands out? If it's one you've got halfway through writing, save it and it'll be in your drafts waiting for you the next day or whenever you want it.

OK! So the link posted above fixed the problem....
... but now I am finding that I have to do this EVERYTIME I want to use the scanner.
Anyone know as to what the problem could be... and how I can fix it.

Are any errors being generated?
Which driver from the link above are you downloading - ie, twain or WIA?
You won't need the WIA driver as that is for faxing.
You might want to completely uninstall all canon scanner stuff using the utility from Canon
http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0900297805.html
Then try reinstalling just the twain driver and seeing if you can access the scanner .

Thanks Bananas - what would I do without you!
It is the TWAIN I downloaded.... but then I wondered if it needs to be
installed
. (Not that I have a clue what the difference is between the two.)
I wondered about it all being uninstalled and reinstalled, but frankly, I would not even know where I begin.
I went into
Control Panel
and had a look at
add / remove
software. There I saw that there is something called
manual
.
I went into
Search
to look for that manual, using the same words I had seeing in the program list, and a huge list of Canon stuff came up, not one of which was named manual... or had anything remotely like it in the file name.
Because there is so much Canon stuff on my computer, how will I know I am uninstalling the right stuff? Where and how will I find what I need to reinstall? (For that matter, how do I know that I need all this stuff which is cluttering up my computer?)
I am far too scared to even attempt to do that. Please help.

Look at the descriptions in control panel. They should indicate what each piece of software is for.
