Well I've use one or the other over the years and I  look probably 10 years younger than my age - so hasn't done me any harm :)

Never heard that before. The only thing I know is that it is not advisable to use when you have dry skin as it widraws moisture from your skin....so great if you have oily skin.

Not true. It doesnt damage your skin. Makes the skin feel more relaxed and soft. Dutch is correct. It also depends on the product too. Its very good for people with blackheads, oily skin etc. But in saying that, you can get soothing peel masks for dry skin too. cheers marie

The only thing you have to be careful with is to not put it too close to your eyes as when you remove the mask, it could pull the delicate skin around the eye area. Most masks will have a warning on the packaging.  Other than that, they are very good for your skin once a week for problem skin or about once a month for a refresh.

Dark skinned people have to be cautious of what products they apply to skin though.......due to pigmentation marks etc. I use a very light scrub (no harsh beads) once a week for a soft, smooth and clean face.

Unless your friend is refering to a mask that makes your skin peel like a 'green peel' you can relax, you'll be fine. Even an egg white mask can be classed as a peeling mask and that's going to do nothing bad to your skin. (unless you have an allergy to eggs maybe...)
