lol, that could be one reason.
Maybe because photographs were so "new" back then, they thought it the same as having a painting done and should have a more sombre, serious, portrait look?

It took so long to take a photograph they ran out of smiles? Plus the camera outfit was frightening?

Perhaps the photographer charged so much that it was hard to smile.
A lot of people still think you're not supposed to smile when you get your passport or licence photo taken but they changed that years ago. Just a bit of trivia for you...

A photo took about 5 minutes to take and you weren't allowed to move during the exposure so no smiling please.
Also in some of the original photos people were put into metal head and body supports to stop you moving. Really nothing to smile about something so uncomfortable.

That's interesting brerrabbit. Hubby and I had new passport photos done in Feb last year and we were told not to smile. Terrible photo of me - I look like it was taken before being locked up..

Never sold knows! The photographs took awhile as the shutter speed was slow so unless you wanted a blur you had to stay perfectly still till it was done. I am just celebrating getting my blue clickable name back with a few replies in the forum.
