OKay anyone know anything about brands of region free dvd players?
Hi this may sound like a strange question but i need educating on this...lol

1. Can you get a dvd player that is already multi region zoned? If so what brands

2  If not can anyone name a good dvd player that is easy to unlock or recommend one?

I recently purchased a dvd that was first season reg 4 but the rest of the season dont come in a region 4.

My current dvd player is old so we are looking at getting a new one anyway,  so before i purchase thought id ask.

Im told that often its the cheaper dvd players that are the best ones? Is this correct???

Also some dvd players dont seem to be as sensitive to scratches as others- My one for example wont play anything with a scratch yet plays perfect in my friends one! Anyone know why?

Any insight much appreciated :-)

Hi,
In answer to the region question:
I'm sure that you can buy a multi-region dvd player - sales assistant should be able to help you with this.

All dvd players are made multi-region then programmed for each region (country) where they will be sold.
Whatever dvd player you buy you can 'unlock' the region by a simple set of steps (eg. press button on remote control - bring up screen - scroll down to 0 the multi-region code) etc The best thing to do is search your make & model in google ("how to change region on Samsung xxx model)

When I did my NEC it only worked if I had the dvd tray open (and empty) I had this in my instructions from the net. Many other people have already done the change so tap into their knowledge & experience - there are whole websites out there with every brand/model & how to change the regions.

As for brands: I have had several NEC which have all been good. Samsung, Panasonic, LG  - sometimes comes down to price for me.

Regarding the sensitivity to scratches: CDs and DVDs are plastic and not indestructable! The laser reads a series of hills and valleys on the surface of the disc. If there are scratches, dirt or (sticky) human fingerprints understandably they are an obstacle to the laser getting a clean reading. It's true that burnt cds and dvds are harder to read. Everything I burn on my player plays on my dvd but may not play on someone elses. It just the nuances (and frustrations) of laserdisc technology!

Yes I have also heard that cheaper players will play anything where as more expensive players are finicky. Strange huh?

You should be able to get a resonably good dvd player for a few hundred dollars. Mine is LG with a hard drive which is great fun for recording titles then burning back (although as mentioned the discs will not play on my brothers player but they will play on Mum's - can be frustrating!)

Good luck!

Hi,
Personally I have found Panasonic DVD players / recorders to be well worth buying, my previous one was multi region out of the box...no need for any mods and my latest Panasonic Blu-ray Recorder is also multi region and the DVD-Ram option is a huge bonus record / edit over & over with no hassles.

 Hi kiwi.

Most dvd players are now region free.

I have found that the more expensive brands ie, panasonic, lg and sony are the ones i get asked for unlocking codes for.

I purchased a $29.95 dvd player for my daughter at aldi 2 years ago.

I found out it was region free so i purchased another one.

They are still going strong.

Most dvd players under 100.00 are region free.

Also you computer can play all regions.

As do the portable ones for the car.

I hope this helps

99% of dvd players sold in Australia after 2002 are already region free - you just need to ask the assistant to make sure the one you want is.

They will all say on the box that they are for Region 4 dvds BUT not mention anywhere that they are region free.

My Sony player states in the hand book that it will only play R4 but it plays every region.

As for not playing scratched dvds maybe player just needs a good clean with a cleaning disc.
