Hi im not a hairdresser but my advice to you would be don't do it yourself. I am a mousy brown and died my hair blonde once. I left it for the allotted time but when i washed it out and it dried it was an orangey colour. A lot of factors go in to getting the right colour. Also being long hair you would probably need about 4 packets of die.

My advice would be to go to a hairdresser and pay a proffessional to do it.

Good luck

Thankyou sailor07,
My hair takes to packs, I dye my hair myself with the dark colours .
Maybe going to the hair dressers would be a good idea, how much do they cost nowadays to dye waist lenght hair?
Regards.

Probably a couple of hundred dollars or more.
Not kidding, last time I was at hairdressers to just get a cut / trim the dead ends only, priced the different saloons in  shopping centre.  Got prices from $45 to $135.  My hair is about midway between shoulder blades and waist.

So I think dyeing would be a fair bit dearer.

Thankyou sheila-bloke47

Yeah i thought Hair dressers would be dear, So i guess dyeing my hair at home would be best.

But what dye product?
I need a dye that will dye my dark hair to blonde in pretty much one time. not 2 or 3 times to get the right colour.

Yes i have tried to dye my hair blonde once before a couple of years ago, the roots went orange the long hair went a light red colour. and the red colour did look kinda nice. so Blonde or light red mmmm thinking.
Regards.

Trying to bleach your hair from dark to blonde by yourself is a very bad idea IMO. You might not want to pay a hairdresser, but you'll probably end up there anyway in order to fix it.

You really need to see a professional the first time, then you could touch it up yourself. I recently got my hair lightened from almost black down to a lighter brown and it was quite a process to make sure it didn't go too coppery, and so the roots didn't go blonder than the rest. It cost me about $230, which is well worth it. You have to wear your hair every day!

Well considering that the standard dye you can buy for home use is meant for shoulder length hair (at longest for best coverage if colour) you would need 3 packs to dye your long hair (approx $30+).

Get advice from a salon - most do sell at home kits.  They will also be able to give you the best advice on what colour/tone of blonde would suit you best.

Personally would only go blonde if being professionally done first off and then maintain at home.

Yes i know how much dyes cost and it only takes two packs for my hair depending on brand that is.
I will look in to the hairdressers costs and see what i can come up with. otherwise it maybe wiser to keep the dark hair.

Thankyou all for the advice. all good.
                  Regards.

WELL SAID....I totally agree. I value my long hair and i would not risk doing anything that would require heaps of money to fix, or worse having to get a heap cut off. It  takes tooo long to grow.

OK ---- I am a hairdresser - retired now  - BUT I would definately not  try this at home - if your hair is already coloured by the souds of it being mahogony tones you run the risk of the dyes reacting to whatever the base/reflect colour was already used on it - you could end up a lovely shade of washed out pink - Nice if that is what your aiming for  - But I guess not. To do this correctly the original colour would need to be stripped out and then the blonde put over it only once the original colour was removed. You run the risk also doing it yourself of uneven colouring as the scalp heat will make the Blonde dye react quicker there and then you will end up with varying shades if you do not correctly apply it and it has to be done in stages. That is why it is not a cheap thing to have done - it is not a sinle case of throwing in a colour and it working out how you would like it - My advice would be to have it done proffesionally as the cost having to pay to have it corrected after you have done it and it messes up would be far more expensive. If you were simply putting in an reflect colour to highlight your hair I would say go for it - but to reverse the colour to lighter - I would strongly reccommend - DON"T DO IT AT HOME !

There are great people on here, thankyou all.
i have decided to put in a highlighter on my dark hair instead of going blonde and yeah i do love the lenght of my hair and dont want to damage it. (My husband would kill me if i had to have it cut off).

Thankyou rosecottagecards! Would you know a good product for flyaways and frizzy hair. my daughter really needs something that would work. Regards.

For Fly away and frizzy hair - Shamed to admit this but for all the expensive Salon products you can buy ------- Try one of the Pantene shampoo and conditioner sets - If she is particularly having a bad day with it simply get a spray bottle and fill it with warm water and add a teaspoon roughly of pantene conditioner - shake it well to dilute it through and just have this handy to mist over her hair for the unrly days ------Hope this all helps.
I swear by Pantene I use the coloured hair combo - Haidressers will look mortified for those who say "I use Pantene" and they usually go into a big spiel about how it contains silicone and lanolin - its a load of rubbish as the product does not contain these things and there was actually a threatened law suit by pantene agaist hairdressers for these accusations when it was first realeased. The only ones I would stay away from are the two in ones shampoo/conditioner together.
Oh and want a great treatment for your hair - don't laugh but try a jar of natural mayonaise - put it through your hair and wrap it in a plastic bag and then a warm towel or sit in the sun for a little whie for the heat factor aound 15 - 20 mins - rinse it off well and use your conditioner just so you don't get chased with a knife and fork - mistaken for a summer salad! LOL - Your hair will be silky and smooth - as the mayo contains proteins.
The only other product I would recommend if ever going to buy a salon product is Joico K-Pak - it is made from Hyrolised hair and will actually work to rebuild hair structure it is not cheap - but it is worth every cent as far a salon product goes - The Joico Bijoba shampoo is great for psorisais and ezcema too........
But I hope this helps........
Good decision not to go ahead with the colouring too - I know you would have regretted it - the science of haircolouring is quite indepth and that is why they have colour technicians -
I will share with you a funny one though - I had a guy that did rock and roll he was going to a comp and had had his hair cut - I get a phone call the next day - HELP "!"I hear on the other end of the phone -- "I have a problem - I put a black dye through my hair the colour has worked great ! "
"So What is the Problem Robert if the colour has worked ?" I say
"Well I stood in the shower to rinse it off and where the color has run down my face I have black lines that wont come off !"
He had put on the colour it had run down while it processed and he didn;t bother to wipe it off - it had gone deep into the skin and I couldn't remove it when he came into the salon - so I he went to the rock and roll looking like a Zebra !!!!
The moral of the story - things can go wrong.....LOL

On the question of pricing ..... I went to the hairdresser on Wednesday and got a colour and trim it cost $101 and my hair is long ( just below the waist) . I finally found a hairdresser that uses natural dyes and honestly they work a treat. I wouldn't dare to do it myself or even with the help of a friend. Sorry but I think if you lighten it you may lose it :-)

One of my daughters has long naturally dark blonde hair just above waist. She wanted a 1/2 head of platinum foils & was quoted over $200. She found & bought a coupon on one of those social buying bulk deal sites (name begins with C) Same salon. Cost $48.00. Just had it done the other day. Her hair looks great! Perhaps you could find a similar deal? Cheers, TTLG.

Not worth it you will end up spending more trying to fix it.
If you can't afford it don't go blonde as there is a lot of upkeep required not only at regrowth time but also with having to buy treatments and care products to prevent your hair snapping to pieces.
I've been blonde for about 15 years from very very dark brown originally.  Tried doing it myself and it went orange of course.  Took a few hairdresser sessions to fix it and years later still have only found one good hairdresser who can get it to a nice blonde colour.
Make sure you put a toner through it whatever you decide to do.

as you dye your hair dark, you need to strip out the colour first. you can buy the colour stripper wherever they sell hair coloring. and then you need to pre-lighten your hair, light blonde is a "9" on the colour chart. So you need to basically bleach it as mentioned, then colour it, then maintain the re-growth every month or so.
