Nail care- cuticle cream etc
Hi All,

Ok, so Im aneamic(sp?) and have alot of trouble getting my nails to stay at any length past the tip of my finger without them flaking or splitting. Now Ive got them about .5cm over the tip and theyre fairly strong, very white, but there starting to split like in between two layers (like my top layer of nail comes off, and the bottom layer is very bendy and yuck) on a couple of my nails. Is there anything I can do about that? Clear nail polish doesnt work.

Also, the skin around the side of my fingers and my cuticles are quite dry and tend to peel....

Although my v-shop is currently off-line (I am going in holidays next weekend) I do have a product by Avon called 'Nail Perfect' which is described as a 'peeling solver'. The bottle states "With continued use, helps prevent nails peeling as well as protecting new nail growth. Use alone or as a base coat." I haven't tried it myself as I don't have this problem, but it may be worth giving it a go. If you are interested, please send me an email.

When I had the same thing happening many years ago - I used Nail Hardener - I think from memory it is like a blue liquid - and then just used a really good nail and hand cream. With the nail and hand cream I would apply it at least 4 times a day and more at night. Hope this helps. Cheers Pat

My nails go thin and will split but I find that wearing nailpolish helps to protect them . then in between wearing nail polish and none they seem to stay ok for a while .

I think while they are so weak the extra strength from the nailpolish helps to protect them.

Olive oil is supposed to be good for dry skin around your nails .

As your nail splitting is caused from a medical condition there is not a lot that can help until you have your anaemia under control.

Only suggestion is to always use hand cream - one with a barrier function to stop moisture softening your nails and stop them drying out further.

Always use gloves when washing/rinsing dishes.

A nail hardener may help but would not guarantee it.

Cuticle oil is a must - massage into nails and cuticles every morning and night - your nails may be brittle from dehydration and impaired nutrients to the nail bed due to your anaemia.

If you can't grow your nails keep them short and tidy.  Short well groomed nails will always look nicer than long broken ones.

Hi,
You can purchase a fabulous product called Horses Hoof. It is a cream and you massage it into the nail and cuticle. It will strengthen and repair your nails like magic.

Hi guys,
Thanks for all your replies! I am medicated for the anaemia now, which is helping. I already have some of that gold strength stuff from Avon, and a vitamin E hand cream, it just didnt seem to cut it.

Ill try some of the suggestions here!
