My kids want to know if you can buy hamsters in Australia???
Ok, so I made a whoops and posted the same question in the "wanted section" instead of here
(it made sense to me...the kids WANTED to know)...lol!!!

I've received some emails telling me that this is the spot to ask, so here I am...

My kids would like to know if it is possible to buy pet hamsters in Australia???

Some people have told me yes we can and others have told me that its illegal to
own them in Australia....so now I'm confused???

If you can help us find out we would love to hear from you.

Fairydragon

Ps, We have had guinea pigs for years...hamsters are smaller and have little tails
and gerbils have long tails with bushy ends(they aren't the same)!!!

Hamsters are in the USA...they are cute and adorable...i think are way cuter than guinea pigs... I dont think you can get them here.I had friends in the USA when i was living there who had them as pets. They use to roll around the house in their little exercise balls..was really funny to watch.

I always thought hamster was the Dutch word for Guinea pig. I know we have them in holland but I do not know if you can get them here. I have had Gerbils and they are cute too but they make a lot of mess and need something (like cardboard) to chew on otherwise they get very bored.

If they are looking for a smallish pet, rats are great (they really are)

Hi, I have looked into owning a hamster as I grew up with them & would  love to have them again, but they are not found in Australia .
As they are classed as a rodent they are not allowed.

Biosecurity Australia has not developed import conditions for this animal and as such AQIS cannot facilitate your import.

Looks like you wont be seeing them here in the near future.

they are both illegal to import in australia. Perhaps you didn't get my message.

Hamsters, gerbils and lemmings are prohibited in NZ and Aust as pets. Several attempts have been made here in Aus to have the laws changed without any success.
The law was changed in NZ in 1978 to allow a small breeding colony to be established at the National Health and Medical Research Institute at Wellington.
A pair of hamsters was smuggled into Aus in 1983 from Europe. The male died within 2 days while the female lived in isolation for some 16 months.
