Mobile phone ,Sim card and Telstra help needed
I need to pick some brains  so maybe someone can help me before I tackle telstra tomorrow ( detest talking to them)

What is happening is that my Mobole Phone contract with Vodafone runs out in Feb (  useless lot they are) and I can get a deal with Westnet for a Sim card .

Now I know pretty well nothing about how these Sim cards work but I get the basic gist of it . I need to unlock my current mobile which I believe I can do via the Vodafone website  .

But here's my question - how does the Sim card work ? When you insert it into an unlocked phone will it automatically pick up with the new provider etc ?

Also if I get a new phone ( like buy one that's not connected with a provider) can I use the Sim in that in will the same as above happen ? I need a new phone but might have to use the Vodafone one for another month.

and now for Telstra > I want to cancel my home line rental and bundle with Westnet who said they would organise that but couldn't answer my question if Telstra charges for me to have my phone changed from them to some one else ? Does anyone know if Telstra charges a disconnection fee when you get your line rental with someone else  ?

( I just want to know before I talk to them so I'm prepared)

I spoke to Westnet today and I understand the offers that they are making , it's just changing phones and phone providers that has me stumped . Usually OH does this but he's left it to me

Any help much appreciated

Hi Issabbella, how are you going?

You need to leave your sim card in the phone. Dont take it out. If you unlock your phone and go with another service provider, leave your sim card in the phone. When you have changed to another service provider, its best for you to get your number transfered to a newer sim card (only then) because the new sim cards are up to date with new technology and hold more coverage for you.

We talk about iphones all the time at work. All phones are unlocked until you put a sim card it.

If your lines are with Telstra, yes they will charge you a disconnection fee.

Hope this helps?
cheers Marie

Hi brats , was hoping you'd pop in

I won't be getting an iphone though but I guess the same principle applies.

So I can unlock the current phone , leave that Sim card in and when I get the new Sim organised ask them to put my old number on it ?

Or could I get a new phone , leave the old one locked and have the phone number transferred to the new Sim card just before the existing contract runs out ?

I hope Telstra doesn't charge much for the ddisconnection , after 30 odd years of never missing a due payment I think they owe me , not me them lol.

Arrr thankyou.  You are very welcome.

Same thing applies to all phones.

That is correct my friend

You can do that too.
I understand what you mean in regards to Telstra. Regardless of how long you have been with them for, they still charge a fee for disconnection.

Marie . I shall have good think about changing line providers as the only benefit is more download data which I don't really need badly but if the discinnection fee is reasonable then it might be worth it .

I don't use the home line to make calls ( or rarely do) but need it for the broadband connection.

grrr I hate doing this lol

You are very welcome Issabella. I too only have my phone line for the internet too. I dont use mine for making calls either.

If you dont mind me asking, what plan are you on for your internet?

ADSL1-Home2 , 25 GB , apparently I can't get ADSL2 as I'm too far from the exchange

Are you able to get Business Broadband ADSL 2+? This one runs off a different server all together?

Has your service provider checked for that? You may want to ask them?

Oh thanks for that apparently it does
but the plans are expensive , the closest one is ( and I guess if I can't get more then 1500k it's no different then I have now speed wise)

Your Exchange: Pawn.....

The telephone number you supplied supports a Off-Net ADSL1 & 2+ connection with speeds up to 8000k. Please choose from one of the Off-Net ADSL1 & 2+ plan options shown below.

ADSL1 Business-2
50GB + 50GB
1500/256k
$119.45

I supposedly get 1500/256 now which used to show on my account but since my call today it doesn't show which is odd . will have to tackle them about that

Yes. Call them and ask exactly what you are paying for.
