I know it affects the retina and the vision right in front of you so that you would be unable to drive, read or see a persons face and that your peripheral vision isn't affected.  It can be caused by smoking, be hereditary mostly in the over 50's.  Also I think diabetes is a factor - though I'm  not sure, even though I'm not over 50 they always check my eyes for it and I'd really be st*ffed if I got it because I already have damage to my peripheral vision from glaucoma!

I don't think the dry type is as bad as the wet or other types, but bad enough.

Sorry that's about all I know.

Hope everything turns out ok, maybe discuss it with you opthamologist and he might ba able to help you manage it - if you smoke then stop (easier said than don't I suppose) I think a change in diet can help - like a diet with more of a certain vitamin or two   -   good luck :)

Sorry to hear that . My dad was diagnosed about 6 months ago with the wet one and his vision wasn't good at all. SInce then, he has been to see an opthalmologist and had a series of injections and his vision has improved a fair bit.

I don't know a lot about it either except what I have read up on it but I do know that he has been on a really healthy diet - heaps of vegies and fish and he has also stopped smoking.

Kind regards, Ang.

It can't be cured but it can be treated and managed.

My mum was diagnosed 12 months ago (in 1 eye only) and has to be retested every 6-12 months or if she notices a change in her vision.  She is also taking MacuVision by Blackmores twice daily as per her specialists advice.

She was also told that everyone will be affected by macular degeneration to some degree as they age.  There are 3 main types Dry, Wet and age related.

The best person to get information on the type you have is the eye specialist you are seeing as they can give you written information so you have a basic understanding of what it is and how it progresses and what you need to do for yourself.
