Is this a virus ?
Hi all - can someone please explain what's happening with my computer when I get into my yahoo email account - and how to fix it ? Once I've signed in and click on a message, I keep getting a flashing message from some person I do not know, right next to the 'what's new' , 'inbox' and 'contacts' tool bars.....it's really irritating me and I want it gone..
I have Bigpond security and the last update was on 6th Feb but this message has been there for near a fortnight, if not more..

Help pleeeeeeease !!

Probably not. I'd say you have allowed messenger alerts enabled in your Yahoo mail options. At the top of the Yahoo email page, click on Options -> Messenger Options. A popup window will appear. On the left, click Privacy. Click on the top option of Block all users not in my contact list. Press Ok.  That should solve the problem.

Cheers

  Gawd !

Thanks Bananas - but...but if I block anyone not in my contact list, wouldn't that then mean I'll block everyone else ? Meaning, I'd never be able to receive emails from anybody unless in my contact list....don't think I'm making sense. Night duty and daylight isn't suiting me right now lol

Two different things. Anyone can send you email, as long as they have your email address. Messenger is chat, and the alerts you are getting are users wanting to chat.

If you don't use Yahoo Messenger, then you can always turn it off. Click the arrow next to your name at the top left of the email page and on the menu that appears click "Sign Out of Messenger". This will keep chat turned off unless you relogin to chat by clicking on the lightning icon at the left of the page.
