How do you get yourself to sleep??
 Hi all,

After tossing and turning for an hour and a half or more I still can't sleep so here I am online...AGAIN...trying to kill time before giving sleep another try.

Got me wondering, what techniques do you use when you can't sleep to get yourself off to the land of zzzzzzzzzzz???

Melissa you sound like me,   especially if I go to bed too early.

I toss and turn and get up again, sometimes do some sort of brainstraining puzzle till I can't think anymore or go for a nice warm relaxing shower and try again.

It's the mind that wont stop alot of the time - I should do some meditation but I got out of the habit and just haven't the patience anymore these days.

Can't help as I'm usually falling asleep at 8pm - even after an afternoon nanna nap - but I do like Spade's idea lol

What is sleep? Lol.
I get around 3-4hrs a night if I'm lucky :(
I think the dreaded PC is my problem. I have found if I turn that off & watch TV for an hour, I bore myself to sleep.

Hi Melissa
They reckon to stay in a routine is the best way.
suggestions were:
A warm / hot shower early in the evening
A hot milk drink ( with or without flavouring ie malt, drinking chocolate) about an hour before bed.
No stimulating activities  for 30mins before bed ie  no computer, TV, games, phones, movies etc
Then in bed at the same time each night with a book if you like.
Then setting the alarm (if you need it) to get up at the same time each day.
No naps after 2pm in the afternoon.
hope this helps
Crystal

When I get the chance I find laying on the lounge at night to specifically watch an awaited tv show damn works...(groan)

I always read when I go to bed. Obviously you don't want to be reading anything too mind stimulating, but I find it relaxes me :-)

If it continues I would have a check up at the doctors, because I was like that for a while until I found I had thyroid problems. I got loads of stuff done with very little sleep though ... lol ...

I can be really tired as in falling asleep on the lounge, I'll go to bed and be tossing and turning.

Spade you suggestion wakes me up even further - it's himself that sleeps more contently ! yeah..me too..lol
then I'll come back downstairs to my PC and browse the forums. it that doesn't work then I turn on the laptop and chat to people in a game called "secondlife" until I get sleepy again. usually about 1 hr later.
works every time.

What I find that works for me is VALERIAN, it's a natural sedative, usually available from any good health food shop. The best part is it is not addictive. I have used it for years. Hope that helps.

Ring up someone boring who likes to talk and never listens. They just talk and talk about themselves and never want to listen to you. They will bore you to sleep. I only discovered this recently.

My teenage son has trouble getting to sleep ... he was told to turn off computer/TV etc an hour before he wanted to go to bed ... on the nights he does that he gets to sleep relatively easily but on the nights he insists on sitting infront of the computer till bedtime, he tosses and turns ...

Yes I know I need to get off this damn laptop so I can wind down before hitting the pillow - just can't help myself tho :( If I do try and head to bed early to try and read my husband decides he's going to go to bed early too but he's got the same idea as Spade! Doesn't do much for my winding down and there goes my chance to read because he wants to go to sleep and won't let me have the light on to read :-P

Good to know Valerian isn't addictive and that it really does work!
