How do I get my 2 year old
to take her antibiotics. She has an earinfection. She just will not take it. Not mixed with a drink and not via seringe. Any tips out there?

Tell her you have panadol.  If you use the nurofen syringe you can put the antibiotics in the to the right measurement and then a smaller amount of kids nurofen in at the end.  They get the taste of the sweet medicine before the yucky taste of the antibiotics.

She gets panadol as a siposetry (sorry about spelling). That is the only way I can give her pain relieve.

And the anti biotics tastes kind of nice so it is not the taste....just the stubornness of my child

Will she drink from a poppa ? put the medication in a strong flavour like apple and berry which might help disguise it. And don;t let her see you do it .
My son would never take his and the old Banana flavour Amoxicillin used to make him gag.

Thanks for the goodies too , they are really gorgeous

hahahaha been there LOTS of times hun.

ok ... Bribe her ...

With willow .. I told her if she took her anti biotics she could feed the fish LOL

It worked like a charm ... every time she needed to take her medicine, out came the fish food ...

Tell her if she takes her medicine, she can have a treat .. help you do something in the house etc ...

ALL 2 year olds are stubborn ... if it worked for my Willow (who is also 2) it will work for anyone LOL

Thanks I might try that...once she calms down. She is so upset that she will not be calmed down. Her one year old sister keeps harresing her and after being in the emergency last night and forcing her to have antibiotics today she does not really trust her (who can blame her).

Can you ge the antibiotics as a suppository??

Ive been there! We had to hold my son down and force the syringe to the back of his throat before we could give him the medicine, then hold his nose. Sounds cruel, and he hated me for it, but he got the medicine he needed.

lvnketmit you should be able to get them in a suppository my eldest was as stubborn as a mule he has mellowed with age.

Anyway this one year a particulary bad bout with tonsilitus could not get his to take antibugs, the docs said lie him partially down and he has to swallow, i told them to try it they did he vomited everywhere!

Within minutes i had suppositories for him on script, Heaps better i found for him and this is what i used for awhile instead of antibugs by the mouth, the suppositories are stronger as well apparently as they get into your system quicker.
This was in New Zealand mind you so it may be different for Australia but worth a try if all else fails :-)

(Hugs) to your little girl hope she's feeling better soon

What....I was told I could only get oral ones either in pills or liquid.

Have been asking if she wants yoghort or a drink. No to evrything...was funny yesterday in the hospital. The had a machine that beeped every few seconds in our consulting room and each time it did she went 'no'.

suppository . . . must be awful for the child to go through that for panadol or anything medical.

Yes that was i got told as well until my son vomited all over them lol mind you in fairness to the docs i never mentioned or really knew what a suppository was- Oh the things you learn when you have children.

Like i said though it may be different here than in New Zealand.

My other 2 children were bribeable as my willow mentioned but then they wernt as stubborn as number 1 son, funny as now he is older he is the opposite.

I found the suppositiry a real relief as he litterally wouldnt take anything it was either that or hospital for him- Worked wonders for him but it was a last resort didnt hurt apply a little vaseline and your fine, they are only small.

It does not hurt, it is done in a few seconds and she gets the full dose 99% of the time. As to do it via a seringe, there is a struggle and a chance to hurt them, it takes a few minutes of forcing them and they often spit part of it out (at least mine does)

Miranda I am not sure whether the antibiotics would have the right effect if diluted with drink or not.
I would try a spoon or syringe in one hand and lolly in the other to bribe her.
2 year olds can be very defiant! Marian

Hi there - I had this trouble with my son and after much frustration and talking to friends who are parents too I ended up getting a different antibiotic - one he WOULD take lol
I think the one he takes is Ceclor? He refuses to take the Amoxyl one....

Good luck with it!

PS: sorry just read your post about the taste not being the problem... Wish I could help!! Good luck Mirandah :-)
I like Marians suggestion above ^

Depending on how much she understands - but you could explain to her that it is for her sore ear,  that there are little bugs in her ear and the medicine will make her better or make them go away/die.  Don't got the way of my dear mother who would tell my kids they would get sicker and die if they didn't take their medicine though ggrrr

The above method did work for my first - but he was way above the normal 2 year old in understanding what I was on about - not sure for the next 2, I did have the same problem with my youngest as Kiwiroo did with her son - but it was the taste or just the medicine with her - pain killers, demazin, cough medicine - would all hit her tummy and come straight back up if I wasn't careful - if I gave them too close together, she had to have the panadol suppositories too for awhile - she would cry and plead with me not to give her 'bummy medicine' but when I explained that other pain killers made her throw up - she let me.  Even now I watch her when she takes pain relief - because she looks like it's coming back up sometimes and she's 11!

Thanks Cloe, tried 'the talk'. She is bright enough but if there is something she does not want, it is just not happening. Guess I was the same. When I was her age (in the 70sh)  I also suffert from ear infections. But that is a while ago and they never gave my mum antibiotics or anything. The only think they did when I was 3 is stick a needle in my ear which hurt like anything. Ah well the good old days.
