Have you had a family member feature in the paper? Ideas to preserve the article?
Hi guys looking for ideas from the artsy fartsy ones here. I had a double spread in the newspaper this week and as its my birthday next week Mum said she'd like to put together a bit of a frame or collage of it for me. She knows i'm fussy though so looking for ideas.
She went and got 2 copies of the newspaper today. Might even order the photo from newspix if they have it. What do you reckon the best way to display them is? Maybe laminate one and frame the other or do a collage of the double page spread and maybe include some of the other little pics they used on the cover?
Have u had a family member in the paper before and what have u done to preserve it as a keepsake?

My wee one has been in the local paper a few times.
I used to be right into scrapbooking and so I made up a scrap book page for each one, complete with decorative bits and pieces.
So far they haven't deteriorated at all. The oldest article is 5 years old.
A lot smaller than a double page spread though. Lol!
Happy birthday for next week.

I use to just cut the article and/or picture out and glue it in a text book and write the date on it, I've also put them in photo albums - these days I just chuck them in a draw, that is if I remember to cut them out pmsl Not what you wanted I know, but they last for a long time. My daughter was in a magazine modelling a dress and I just kept the book mag.

My daughter featured twice in one week in a NZ paper.
Was having a dinner party for her one day and photocopied the articles to placemat size.
Copied the number required and then laminated them to use as placemats.
I used some more in various sizes for table centre pieces and coasters.
The idea went down well.

some great ideas thanks guys and cheers for the bday wishes :) ginger that is so cute...the things Mums do!
I did a bit of googling as well and theres a place in Port Melb that does some sort of block mounting with it but i reckon it might be costly for a double page.

Hi ya and Happy Birthday.
You can do your own type of block mounting.
use a spray adhesive place pics on board use a product called "envirotex ". this gives a coat 50 times thicker then varnish .
google envirotex epoxy this will give you all the info.

Do a test run with other pages from same newspaper before heat laminating sometimes the ink from other side comes through or it all goes black and other times it works great.
If you don't laminate the pages they will eventually go yellow from UV and oxygen exposure.
You could always ask the newspaper if they can provide you with some colour copies on normal paper.
Some local newspapers are now online and you may be able to download the page/s and gewt them professionally printed on acid free paper.

Hi, I know you posted this a few weeks ago, I'm new here and couldn't help myself but reply. I have worked with preservation of printed materials - albeit a long time ago.
Newspaper is natoriously short lived. However laminating will certainly help in preservation. However, even laminating will not prevent deterioration of ink pigments from sunlight.
The very best method of preserving the information and pictures is to scan to a high resolution, then print on archival photographic paper (Cannon and a few other brands are fine).
Scan your information before laminating, the laminating film may cause odd reflections etc.
Once you have your pages on photographic paper, maximise their longevity by following the principles of most scrapbookers. (Put the laminated papers in a dark place for future reference, show off the scrapbooked version).
Have fun, it is a rewarding experience to preserve the past for the future.
Cheers
