Gift basket ideas for a new Mum
Hi all!

Hoping some of you might have some nice, different ideas for what I can do..

My SIL is giving birth to her first child mere weeks after her own birthday (more of a gap than me and Mum but that's another story!!).  She doesn't want to do anything to celebrate her birthday this year so I thought I'd make up two baskets to take to her baby shower - one for bubs as most people do and one as a bit of a pamper pack/survival kit for Mum.

I have no idea if she is going to try and breasfeed or not or whether she will be going cloth or disposables for nappies so want to steer clear of that side of things but for bubs basket I have..

Wipes (sensitive)
travel wipes case - one of those pretty covered ones.
A couple of outfits I've sewn on.

Mum's basket

Little food tubs for when bub starts solids
Moisturiser ( a nice one, not just basic supermarket stuff)
Shower gel/body scrub
Loofah

Nothing is set in concrete as yet apart from the outfits as I've already started those!!!  So any thoughts and ideas whould be great - looking to kinda spoil Mum as Mum's often get forgotten when it comes to gifts at showers and it is partly for her birthday too.

Thanks all!

When my sister had her babies I did the same thing ...

In my sister's I put all the nice smelly stuff but also got her a voucher for a manicure and a pedicure, 2 gold pass movie tickets (valid for a year), a gift voucher for a house clean and a couple of light hearted books for the lonely hours feeding!

In the bubs I put small bottles of shampoo, sunscreen, lotions, baby wipes of different brands so she could try them out and decide which she preferred without incurring alot of expense (I started early and shopped on the specials). I also went on to websites and got free samples from Johnsons, Ego etc to add into the package. I also bought things like disposable change mats (which she loved!), I picked up pamphlets including one about car seats (what's suitable for what age) and included the phone number of the nearest fitting station. I found a free dvd on kids and pool safety/swimming and one on travelling on public transport with children. I also included a sun safe legionnaires cap and rashie as they go to the beach quite a bit!

My sister was rapt with the practical things

Hi Tiny,  I was going to say instead of a basket for the mother to give her a pamper pack but Cezm beat me to it.  I always remember a teacher I had once say to me the best thing she got was a personal visit from a beautician after she had the baby.  She got a facial, hair wash & blow dry and manicure.  Said it was the best thing out after feeling so ragged after giving birth.  What Cezm said fits the bill but in a basket.

How about some different herbal/flavoured tea? There is lots in the supermarket these days.

I would have loved an assortment of teas, some chocolates/biscuits, a book or DVD, maybe some candles or soy melts, and yes, massage oil, moisturising creams, etc that you have already mentioned.

This consisted of:

2 baby blankets, 4 face washers, medicine spoon, johnsons baby lavender cream, 2 johnsons baby soaps, baby thermometer, my little pony bowl, 2 baby bottles, Huggies Shea Body cream x1, Body Shop Buritie baby lotion, Baby on board sign for the car, teddy bear, avent sippy cup, 6 x Feeding time placemats, and a baby photo album. For the mother, I made a hamper with body shop items for mum.

Hope I have given you some ideas? cheers marie

I used to love doing up these things for friends and family who were having babies, I'd use a baby bath to put it all in (if they didn't have one), or a Washing basket (as it's something they can use later) just take a walk in the baby section of any shop, be it Woollies to K-Mart, you'll find lots of useful little items there, but I could easily spend $200 - $300 this way.  Just remember not to forget the Chocolates for the new Mum!!!  Have fun with it all :)

Cheers

Thanks for the ideas all.

And yes brat, that's exactly why I am doing two baskets, one for baby and one as a pamper thing for Mum so she's not forgotten (though Dad is but he's had the easier time of it all!!)

I now have a few other things I can go get to pop in Mum's.  Bub's was easy!!

Will be doing a story book with inscription rather than a card too - something that can be kept and used over and over rather than read and stuck in a book or thrown away.
