FODMAPS diet - anyone know anything about it?
My GP has suggested a diet called FODMAPS which looks at the fermentation rates of certain foods. This is appararently useful in cases of Irritable Bowel and other gut problems.  It looks fairly restrictive to me, but the confusing part is that no one site has consistent lists. Some foods are allowable on some lists, and problematic on others.  Any comments?

Hi Eileen,   I have NO idea about that diet but if you have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel  you will have to just do a lot of experimenting.  The diet for irritable bowel is fairly bland but you get used to it and over 30 years you know what you can and can't eat.  Just try one different thing at a time and see if it sets it off= change brands, dairy try low fats and the things for heart patients with the red ticks.  I love maltesers and every now and then I get a small packet knowing they will set me off but I still do it.

Well it really is what affects you, no two people are the same.  I get the worst stomach (not abdominal) pain I have ever had when I eat avocado - my doctor said he had never heard of it being a problem, but did believe me and there it is on the list!  When it comes down to it - you either avoid these foods or suffer,  it really isn't that restrictive because not all of them will affect you I imagine.

The best way IMO is to go on the elimination diet and then add these foods one at a time for I think it is 3 days and then see if they have any affect, if they do then put them on you list as something to avoid, if not go for it  :)

One of my daughter's has the same sort of problem. She has to see a dietitian who will test to try and determine which foods she may be intolerant to.

She recently purchase a book which lists appropriate food, both fresh and processed which you may find helpful.

More information can be found at:

Thank you to all of you for your help. I will certainly investigate the Shepherd book. What a pity all the trials are in Victoria! (I'm not)

I was on one for a while whilst waiting for results of testing for gluten intollerance (after endoscopy and colonoscopy).

Have a coulpe of sheets somewhere on what I was and wasn't allowed to eat but even sticking to it strictly did absolutely nothing to help with my problems.

As it turned out, I'm not celiac and they can't work out what is wrong but for me the diet was a waste of time.  Got a good dose of candida out of it too!  So much for not having sugar.....
