Faulty Item Bought - Need to vent some steam before going to store
We bought a bike yesterday from a large toy store.  They have bikes on sale for 50% off so we decided to treat our son to a bike as his old one is just hanging in there.
So excited in store paying and heading home.
Bike was put together last night but we had to wait for the servo to open this morning in inflate the tires.
Went to servo and tried to inflat tires only to find the bike has a faulty valve and the tyres just won't stay inflated.
I rang the store this morning only to be told that we should have paid the extra $15 for them to put the bike together and then we would have had a warranty of the parts.
I told them that I bought I bike to ride and not a faulty bike.
The young girl just kept on about the warranty ect.
I told her that the item is faulty and I want to exchange for another.
Over and over we went with the same.
She then told me to take it into store and she will see what they can do.
Now for me that is a 45 minute drive with an unhappy child.
I just wanted to check if anyone else has had this problem and should I be entitle to a replacement.
I was under the impression that I was buying a new bike and not a faulty one.
I hope those buying these bikes are not putting them away for Christmas as they may have the same fault.
If it was my store I would be appologising to the customer and telling them to bring it in for a replacement not going on about warranties.  The bike is not even 24 hours old in our house, not riden or anything.

Sorry just had to have a nag.

I will be going there this afternoon to see what I can do.

Oh that's a bugger. Don't let them get away with it.

It's about time stores had to compensate us a fee when we are out of pocket fixing their faulty goods or bad service. Then you would see things improve dramatically.

I'd be demanding a replacement or refund!  We bought a bike from a similar place years ago and it was the biggest waste of money, we've had endless trouble with it!  Our next bike will come from a bike shop!

Save yourself the stress & travel cost .....

IF it is only a faulty valve, go to your local tyre joint ....
Valves are about 30c each & they will probably look after it as a goodwill item.

This isnt Kamrt is it?

I ask as a friend last Christmas brought a bike from mthere for her children and it was faulty.

You are able to get a replacement bike, nothing to do with warranty as it wasnt/isnt fit for the purpose it is intended for (that being to ride)

If there is no replacement you are entitled to a refund.

Hi,

Check that the seal is screwed in properly. if it is not sitting in the tyre properly they don't seal (Iv'e just been told) so it could be a very easy item to fix (plus you can also buy replacement seals - I've also just been told)

If the issue is bigger than that I suggest ringing consumer affairs and finding out what your rights are in relation to this and when you go back to the shop speak to the manager not the girl.

Hope it works out for you.

Let us know how you go.

Edit - Ooops I meant faulty valve / replacement valves (not seals) was in a rush when I wrote this before

It was bought from the ***S R US store.
If you are getting one for Christmas set it up now or just open the box and check that it is all OK before hiding for Christmas.
I have already rang the manufacturer and they are going to send out a new tube.  But we think it's the valve not the tube.
I tried to call their head office but was just put through to an answering machine for customer service.  Great customer service that is.
Normally I would just get another vavle from the servo but it is the principle of it now.

I doubt it was Kmart ... as they are usually pretty good with exchanges.
It was probably that toy store with the 'giraffe' .. something ... R US ?

They DONT like to be wrong and dont like to exchange things

I would never buy a bike from a toy shop after helping my neighbor assemble her 2 kids bikes on Christmas Eve. What a disaster! Bits missing, wrong parts, and instructions written in that wonderful Chinese transalation. If you buy from a proper bike shop, the bike will be fully assembled and safety checked before it leaves the store.  And, usually the bikes are better quality and the prices are comparable with toy shops.

A certain small town Harvey Norman store (wont say which store) are notorious for selling faulty items then refusing to either give a refund or an exchange. I bought a steam cleaner from them once and had nothing but trouble with it from the word go. each time they made me carry it off to a repair shop and I ended up going back there 3 times with the faulty thing before they agreed to give me an exchange.

I even rang dept of fair trading about it and they said that even when you buy a faulty item the store doesnt have to give you an exchang or refund, they just obligated to take care of the repairs.

Well got back from the store with a very happy child.
I got to the counter and just said I would like an echange of this bike.  They asked why and I showed them the flat tyre.
The girls at the counter went out the back and brought a new one straight out to us.
I filling in a couple of return forms ect and off we went home.
The bike is now assembled and happy child has already had a ride.
We are planning a picnic tomorrow just so we have somewhere to take the bike.

It was like I was in a different store than the one I rang this morning.

The new bike had both tyres already inflated so there must have been something wrong.

It was the store with the giraffe on their adds.

We have bought bikes in the past from propper bike stores but they were stolen from our house on Christmas Eve a few years ago.  We think we know who did it but you can't really say anything unless you are 100% sure.

The bikes they have been riding around on since then were cheap toy store bikes.

I know the toy store bikes probably don't last as long as bike shop bikes but the way my kids go through them I just can't afford the hundreds of dollars the bike shops are asking.

Well all good so far.  Hope the bike lasts a while now as I just can't go through this again in the near future.

Nag over.

Glad everything worked out.

This link to your consumer rights is good reading www.fairtrading.qld.gov.au/consumer-rights.htm also the warranty links on that page. It is for Qld but other states are similar, just check out the fairtrading website in your state.

We bought a new tv a couple of months before Xmas last year. Had nothing but trouble with it, had it in for repairs a couple of times without being fixed. They wanted to repair it again but I demanded a refund or exchange after reading the link above. Got a new tv that hasn't had a problem... the first one was obviously a lemon but they wanted to just kept trying to fix it.
