 Aw shucks, someone wants me

Calo, you sure know how to ask the tough questions.....

'Crystal' can be anything really. Sometimes it refers to the fact that it is a natural crystalline material and sometimes it simply describes the fact that it has been cut into a crystal like shape. By that I mean the material (could be glass, a composite, plastic, an inexpensive gem material, whatever) has been faceted - similar to the dangly bits on a chandelier. Sometimes it can be faceted glass with a film like coating to give it a mirror finish. You see this a lot in costume jewellery from the early 20th century.

Crystals like the Swarovski type are man made and have a high lead content, this enables the precise cutting and aids the sparkle factor. I believe they also contain silica and um...other bits.

So to say something is 'crystal' is insufficient and possibly misleading as many would assume that crystal refers to something natural.

For the purposes of this question, I would say that it is best to assume that you are talking about 'fashion' rather than fine jewellery.

Cheers,

CP

Hey Issabella, I just wanted to say that you posted a really good resource.

I used several online tutorials to supplement school stuff when I was studying, but haven't seen this one before. Obviously I haven't been through every page, but from what I have seen it is comprehensive without being overly academic - good find!
