Crabby Baby :)
Little Riley is now 6 weeks old and for the last week and a half he has done a complete flip, He went from such a content happy baby to a really cranky, crying, in pain baby,
I have tried switching formulas and bottles and it seems to work for a day maybe then he goes back to the way he was,
He seems to be in alot of pain, he crys alot and is very unsettled, only having nanna naps and bringing up alot of his milk, also his bowels seem to have gone into overdrive and he is pooping atleast once every bottle if not more and they are not exactly firm either.I can actually hear his little tummy gurgle when i feed him :)
Has anyone had their babies do this and if so what did you find that worked, I hate seeing him in pain,
What bottles did you find worked best and what formula?
Any ideas most welcome
Cheers Jayne

I used the Heinz Formulas as they were quite filling to my babies. Some Formulas are Casein Rich & Others Whey Rich. It will depend on what each baby prefers. I would also make a call to the midwife or if you have a good baby nurse and see if they can suggest something for you. I have never had a colic baby but perhaps this is what you are experiencing too? There are definitely mums out there way more qualified with regards to colic and symptoms ( and of course ways to ease baby's pain). I hope your little one feels batter soon.

Hi hun, I had a very unsettled baby like you.
his tummy was also gurgling even though he was fed regularly was always screaming and in pain!
screaming and crying even turning purplish red!
Doctors told me babys cry! i went to heaps of doctors, I knew it wasnt normal.
finally my baby threw one of these screaming/crying bouts while i was in at the doctors...
and the docotor told me to give him mylanta!
apparently my baby had acid reflux!
Yep i was breast feeding and because i was munching on vinegar and salads my bubs got way to much acid!
I know your not breast feeding...but perhaps he has a in tolerancy to something??
have you taken him to the doctors yet?
(hugs)

I have his 6 week check tomorrow at the docs so I will ask him what he thinks, I just thought someone here might know a thing or two, You all know what doctors are like, They tend to think its all normal when mother knows best :)

I used MAM bottles and Karicare formula. Both were great IMO

Both my bubs done this! were angels till they were 6 weeks old then turned into little devils lol!
Both my children had reflux, they were unsettled, in pain and from after lunch till 10 at night the screamed :( was extremely difficult but only lasted till the 4 month mark with both mine.
They brought up rediculous amount of their bottles which was messy!
Only thing that helped my bubs was reflux formula and keeping bubs upright as much as possible, we would burp them for a long time and we avoided laying them flat on their backs, even their matress was tilted.
Sounds alot like reflux, but im sure your doc will let you know :)
If you ever want to chat send me a message :)
Cheers,
Simone.

Many years ago my friends baby went from being a placid baby to crying and cranky , it turns out he had an allergy to the powdered baby formula and had to go onto another type . She had to get it from the hospital . Not much help am I but perhaps taking a look at the type of formula might be something that can be done.

I had a really bad reflux baby with the screaming and vomiting but the rippling in the belly and loose motions was caused by an allergy to milk.

I never found the mylanta to work much for the reflux. Only thing to do was keep him upright and we bought him a jolly jumper so he could bounce around burping and farting to ease it all.

Until you get to his check up to find out, try having a nice deep bath with him. It seems to ease their belly ache if you hold them under the armpits and let them kick around in the water. Settles them to sleep really well afterwards. You do run the risk of having him deposit a nice surprise in the bath with you though so try to have someone close enough to grab the baby as you leap screaming in horror from the bath.

Lol @ remaynerecycled
I actually just gave him a bath and he has settled down nicely,
I think you may be right when you say it may be a bit of a milk intolerance as well as reflux, But i will see what the doc say tomorrow,
Thanks everyone

My daughter was the same but she started this after I weaned her off the breast and onto formula.  She is lactose intolerant.
We put her onto watered down soy milk and increased her solids intake so she was not hungry.  When they have formulas that do not agree with them it affects their stomachs causing pain and runny  poos.
Check with your doctor or baby nurse as to what is wrong.

Our bubs had acid reflux had to give some type of medication to kill the acid, had to give para choc in toddler years too, had one flare up at 6yo where she was in excruciating pain, paediatrition couldn't work it out
Having lots of veggies in her diet and fruit seems to do the trick and have had no further flare ups touch wood

Good luck and hope you find out what is wrong with him. I breastfed my first and after 2weeks old, he started doing exactly the same thing. Arching, screaming in pain esp as soon as I went to lie him down and generally like this most of the day. He had reflux - he would projectile vomit but as I was breastfeeding - and was put on medication but this still didn't help him. After a couple of weeks of exhaustion, I cut dairy out of my diet completely and within a couple of days he was a different baby. I have since been diagnosed with lactose intolerance and if I have any milk myself, even the smallest amount, I pretty much get the same symptoms that you have described for your baby.

I wish you luck. Cheers, Ang.

Poor thing. MAM bottles and Heinz Nurture Step 1 (whey based) worked best for my bub. I had initially put her on S26 and she would bring that up all the time and just didn't sit well with her at all.

When I switched her to Step 2 (casein based) she had explosive poos, after every feed and then some, just like your bub.

When I read your post my first thought was that it was a lactose intollerance. Karicare has a great lactose free formula at a good price (my local Terry White chemist has the best prices on formula). It made a difference straight away when i tried it after having her on step 2 before switching back to step 1.

Worth a try...good luck!

Hi Jayne,
It sounds like he has either reflux or colic. My daughter had colic really bad .
The Dr told me to give her infacol drops which you can buy at the supermarket.
I also gave her the avent bottles for reflux with the thickened formula and that helped her as well.
The infacol drops were fantastic and helped my daughter alot.
I would get him checked by your GP as well.
Bella.

see if u can find a baby doctor near you and make appoinment he may be allegic to the milk and have to go on a soy based milk which i think the better ones are on script and u usually get a few cans at a time

Jayne I hope you find why your poor little bub is now unsettled. One of my Grandsons had reflux and had to go onto Soy.
One of mine was hungry at 6 weeks, and the simple solution I was given was to add 1/2 teaspoon Farex to the bottles. This was a bub born at over 9 lbs.
They are all little individuals.
Once you find he problem he will soon settle down, Marian

Grrrrrrrrr, Went to the doctor for his 6 week check (a doctor I normally find very good) and he all but said to me that I was overreacting and that all babies cry and that there was nothing wrong with him :)
Well i basically ignored everything he said and little Riley is now on Lactose free formula which I am also thickening and he is a new baby, The crying has stopped, The pooping has stopped and he slept all night, Well untill 4 in the morning when I woke him up because it scared me that he wasnt up already lol
He even had his needles yesterday, A little early because there has been a few cases of whooping cough going around, and while a little upset by them he is still perfect, Just the way he was before all the tummy problems.
Now for my next question, The dodtor told me that all these fancy formulas for this and that are just a gimik and that I should just put him back on the regular one again, Is it really going to hurt him if I leave him on the lactose free one, Should I just wean him back onto regula formula slowley and see what happen or what, Iam so confused
Jayne

My doctor said stay on the lactose free. I had to take the baby to Emergency one night for a high temperature and the doctor there berated me for putting him on the soy formula and told me I should put him back on normal. So I did. Instant rippling cramps through his belly that I could feel when holding him and one screaming baby with many dirty nappies.

Ignore your doctor. Do it nicely but say nope he's much better this way and I'd rather pay for a fancy formula to keep him happy than take the risk.

If Riley keeps vomiting but has no other horrible pains other than an occasional belly ache from wind then he's also got reflux which he'll grow out of. Mine used to vomit up whole bottles but kept the weight on and was happy so it was just more of an ick problem than a health one. Once he got to walking stage he stopped the vomiting.

Mine also had a problem with iron which I was taking in vitamins when breast feeding him and which they pack into most formulas. If you find after a few days that Riley starts to belly ache again and seems constipated then look to a soy one that's iron free.

Once he gets to eating solids stage you just make up things like wheat bix or custards with soy milk or his formula if you want to try him out on those.

And if your doctor gets huffy and you want to stay in his good books tell him you tried putting him back on normal formula and within an hour of the first bottle he was back to screaming with his legs drawn up in pain and had filled his nappy. so you put him back on the Soy.

That way you look like you tried to do it his way.

When i had my lil girl 17 months ago i breast fed her till she got oral thrush and she didn't want me anymore we put her on S26, she seemed to have a little reflux so put her on S26 AR ( anti reflux ) helped her heaps.
Good luck hope everything has settled for your baby xx
