Come on sellers!

There are hundreds of people with vouchers to spend here and there were 31 ads in SPOTD yesterday!

31 sellers out of how many hundreds of thousands?

How long do you think the buyers will hang around browsing?

And how long will it be before the next thread on lack of sales huh?

2 ads so far this morning so doubt much browsing will be done by me today. Been spending around 4 hours a day looking at Vshops (something I normally seldom do) and for naught.
Found a couple of things by doing a specific search but still have money to spend and nothing in mind to spend it on.

If you think we will easily find you when we have no idea what we want to spend the $100 on then think again. You should be coming to us via advertising. Tell us what you sell.
Just as well we have 60 days to spend and personally I don't care if I don't spend it all, not my money

Yep. Hundreds of thousands of sellers here and only 31 SPOTDs yesterday.

As for the ads not being looked at, who wants to waste time looking at ads without knowing what's inside?

Takes too long to go to the ad, see no pick of the day, still have no idea what they sell or see so many Adgets and have to browse through hundreds or thousands of items.

Or, see a pick of the day in the title but no link to the item and have to browse through hundreds or thousands of items to find it.

And if people want to believe that nobody looks in SPOTD go ahead, but I'm here to tell you many take one look and leave never to return as there is seldom anything to catch the eye.

And no details when there is something to catch the eye.

It is not supposed to be a place to advertise everything you have for sale but Seller's Pick Of The Day. If it is something we want and if there is a link to that item we will probably browse your other stuff.

But you have to get us in the damn door first!

Or not! A matter of choices so if you can't be bothered because you believe nobody will look then you must consider your stuff not worth looking at.

So there!

And on that note, I'm taking the day off. No skin off my nose and no money in seller's pockets.

Edit.
BTW. When using the vouchers it is all done in Checkout so the buyer has to know what the discounted cost is and the price of postage on multiple items before they complete Checkout so it's all done in reverse at the moment.

See! Told you I read them.
But as I'm the only one apparently just ignore.
Shrugs.

PS. If you check my Ratings left for others you will see that I buy from SPOTD ads as I always say so to let the seller know they didn't waste their time advertising

I know you advertise Quickbuys as I think I have bought from you before and always check your ads but you don't state what you sell and it takes a long time to look at what everybody sells.

Sorry to single you out as an example but that's the way it is, with me only of course.

Edit.
A buyer has absolutely no way of knowing what anybody sells here.

It's different to a B & M Shop. If we see an ad for a supermarket, bookshop or a clothing store we can pretty much guess what they sell. But as I pointed out to a seller years ago when I was new, because her ID was something jewels I assumed she only sold jewellery so had never looked at her items. Turned out she sold lots of stuff. I guess she's gone now as I never see her ID any more.

PPS. As some of us never put anybody in their Favourites List, and there is less chat in the forums, you have to remind buyers you are still here.

Maybe it helps if you know what you want to buy (or at least have a vague idea)

Perhaps a few "wanted" ads would be more effective as at least Sellers come to you and show you specific items, which is what you want.

Also if you ask for specific items, sellers can list them if they haven't already done so.

It would save you a lot of "window" shopping - LOL !

We're in doing the spotd just about each day, usually twice with differing catagories - unless I'm busy that is - hence user id. Sometimes spotd works, sometimes not - just depends on what the items are that ppl are looking for (like pisces said), what sellers are charging for postage - today I found something that weighs 2g, measures less than 2cm square yet the seller wanted $10 registered post...doesn't add up cost wise...their loss.

That's just it. Browsers have no ideas in mind.

I never expected to win a voucher and mostly only buy stuff for grandchildren or knicknacks for Geocaching here.

In this case I have a son with a birthday coming up, one who hates reading, but as a good reader myself I must encourage him, he loves cricket so if Marian hadn't put up that Ad in SPOTD I would never have found it as I thought she only sold clothes and stuff.

Son has done well out of this voucher actually.

And now I must be excused as I am running late.

The doom and gloomers can come in after I've gone    But I will be back.

With the SPOTD it can be general, say adnertising that you have* boys size 12 winter and combine post & pay Pal welcome*
I DO NOT have that size so not advertising ~ just an example I used.
If I see *adjet inside* I dont even look, that really is a turn off to me, some sellers have pages and pages and expect buyers to look at them all.
WANTEDS are often replied to with ridiculous responses, no wonder people are reluctant to place a WANTED! Marian

I used to advertise in spotd religiously, but like many others got discouraged at the lack of 'clicks' on my ads.  When I do advertise in there  I always put the title of some of the things I have in the ad, but with limited title space, can't put everything.  So it is a guessing game as to what will catch the prospective buyers eye.  There maybe something featured inside, but because it isn't in the title, the ad doesn't get looked at.

However, having said that I am off to put in a spotd lol.  I have to say that when I have brand new listings I always do a spotd, but that would only be once a week.

I did an SPOTD around lunchtime & have had a few lookers. I do one on average every 2nd day, as sometimes my one from a day or two prior is still on the front page, so I just add to that one.

I don't know how to do an Adjet, or even a clickable link, so this may hamper my SPOTD ads?

I do sometimes advertise how many offers accepted on a particular day, as it's difficult to pick just one item from many to highlight for special treatment.

I'd like to clear some items for new listings, so want to promote Offers. Is this wrong to do in SPOTD? I don't have a v-shop, so can't have a percentage off sale. I've lots of listings to do; But shy away from having more than 400 items listed. I feel that under 400 is the magic number that I can cope with comfortably & still maintain friendly personal service, fast combined postage, & good product knowledge. Cheers, TTLG.

Wow! Must be over 50 ads in SPOTD today!
Good work.

May go to show people do read the forums even if they don't participate?

I sincerely hope there were sales for you. If not today please don't be put off as there is always tomorrow or even next week.
It's free and only takes a few minutes so why not use it?
I really believe people stopped going there because of the Look at Me type of ads.
Think like a buyer sometimes, go and have a look at other people's ads. Would you be attracted enough to read it?
There is one seller who does ads in colours sometimes and that makes me look. I hope she gets sales from it as I thinks it's clever.

I saw somebody complaining about lack of sales once and when I asked why she never advertises in SPOTD she replied that she did once but it didn't work.
If B & M Shops only had to advertise once we would not have letterboxes full of catalogues.
Out of sight, out of mind.

Just because I read SPOTD every day, sometimes twice a day, doesn't mean I buy every time, even without the voucher. Which is looking rather depleted at the moment and here was I telling somebody when I first used PayPal that I hoped I would not win a voucher as I would have trouble spending it. Then when she told me I had won my first word was an expletive followed by, 'well I do have 60 days to find something.'

Sometimes buyers see ads and put the items on Watch for when they have spare money. Maybe it would help convince others to make the effort if we all put in the Ratings we leave that we found it in SPOTD?

Now you sell frangipannis too?

Only joking.

Have finished dinner now.

==================================================================

Yep, I remember you Quickbuys, saw you advertise the name change in SPOTD one day.

==================================================================

You can advertise as much or as little as you like in SPOTD Throughthelookingglass and how you like, Twice in 24 hours. Some people put the two in together

It's probably laziness on my part but as I don't have a baby or need / want some items, I find it saves time if I don't have to read those titles, whereas young mothers would prefer to read them and avoid others.

But it's all about choices.

Thank you for the trouble you went to today and good luck with sales.

Hi Ya Lee...I didn't know you had changed to pink-frangipanni.
Hope you still receive my emails?
I rarely advertize in SPOTD, if I have done a heap of listings then I might pop into SPODT.
If I see a wanted add for something I have that is not listed then I list it.
I more items not listed then listed. most is Real gold and Sterling silver I have been trying to get rid of larger items 1st besides Gold and Silver increases in value. but when I do list it I keep it at the lower price relating to when I bought it and not what it is worth now.
So for all those who do have an idea of what they would like...
Please put in a wanted add so ppl like myself who might have that item but not listed can list it and advise you via your wanted add.

Well... personally, I have given up on browsing through SPOTD entirely... and I doubt I'm the only quicksales member who feels this way.

The last three times I looked through the advertisements there (all within the past 10 days)... I have found more than 50% of the sellers had unenforcable postage liability disclaimers (no hope of any sales there)... around 15% of them offered PayPal, but imposed policy breaching limitations on its use (no sales there, either)... and apart from one or two others, the rest of the sellers had a horrible Adget in their SPOTD... which had me scrambling for the back button at a rate of knots (no sales there, either)... so who knows if their terms were acceptable?

It really just wasn't worth the couple of hours it took on each occasion to sift through the trash to locate the handful of genuine sellers who were fair dinkum about trying to advertise in a buyer friendly fashion and make an honest sale.

Edit (17:51): I must say thankyou to the sellers such as pashmina who state in their SPOTD title that they have an Adget inside... bypassing these saves heaps of time.

Not only are Adgets butt ugly... but they play havoc with the PC... they might be OK for people with ADSL (if they can get by the appearance thing)... but with limited bandwidth and a dial-up connection, I have quickly learned to give them an extremely wide berth.

I prefer to select which items chew up my bandwith by viewing... rather than having a heap of irrelevant items thrust in my face by a disrespectful seller... and then half of the images don't even open anyway... and the page just hangs while it keeps trying to d/l the files.

It's much quicker, easier and cheaper to simply hit the back button immediately.

I do use Adgets - and didn't know they played havoc with some browsers - so apologies if I did.

I try and be fair with all my selling - paypal and postage - no limits or restrictions and as much information as I can.

Hasn't helped much with sales - but anyway.

Heaps of people say they read them - and then others say they don't - as a seller - I have no idea where I stand with potential buyers.

Well - that is what I was using them for too Pirate - with the large number of listings I have across all stores.

I thought it would narrow it down to a specific theme for some.

Like I said - some say do this - others say do that - others don't like this - others don't like that.  Which is fine and individual choice - each to their own.

At the end of the day - and to fit in with "all" or just one of that criteria - I have no idea which "one" product out to focus on twice a day.  And then hope it draws someone's attention.

Same as any other advice given in life Jules. In the end it all comes down to personal choice. Smart people would take note of the common sense stuff like clear pics and descriptions, keywords in titles for searches but go with their own taste on things like adding adjets as that's one where you can't possibly please everyone so you may as well please yourself.

The only time it really matters is if you see a lot of your target buyers loathing the same thing. Like if you sold coins and noticed lots saying they hate not having a pic of both sides of a coin in listings..........you'd make sure you had two pics in there yes?

Replied by pisces-oztion on 22-May-2011 09:56 (Ref 2293630) Report

Jmb7339, perhaps it matters more in getting your name up there.

So many sellers here are invisible. We never see them in the forums and that includes Wanted and Spotd Ads.
Also people we know sell particular items say they are leaving here, some return some don't, so to a buyer it really is a case of forgetting who sells what.
After all, there are hundreds of thousands of sellers here, somewhere.

An example. We have three hardware stores.
Mitre10 advertise all the time so they get the most regular business. Bulte's is forgotten about by the general householder until they have a Sale but used more by tradesmen.
The other one rarely has Sales and damned if I can remember their name at the moment. It's either Thriftylink or the other one which I can't remember either.

Anyway, my point is that unless a buyer is doing a Search for a particular item and gets directed to the seller or they pop into the forums and we click on their ID, we have no idea even what type of items they sell as one can't tell by the Username, unless they do SPOTD Ads or Wanted Ads.

It doesn't have to be twice a day or daily, even weekly. But the saying of 'out of sight out of mind' really is true.

As was bought home to me when I was looking for something to spend the voucher on and a grandson asked "why don't you see if that man who sold us the other one has it?"

I had forgotten all about that seller. I checked and he didn't have it but I now have something else on Watch.

Edit.
But, as I just remembered, it's none of my business how others want to run their business and I have spent my Voucher now. And who knows? Maybe a few sellers who did bother to put up SPOTDS the other day, made some sales.
Cheers.

I don't think Jules was debating whether to use spotd or not so much as how to  use it as in use adget, don't use adget type stuff. Conflicting advice can be confusing and no matter which way you go with it there is always someone not pleased. So in that case you are best to go with personal choice I think unless there is something to indicate that the majority of your target audience loathe something.

Why is it that people think that everyone has access to ADSL & High Speed Broadband?
Why is it that people think that everyone has access to cheap bundled Telco deals?
One of the great benefits of sites such as QS is that people who live outside major population centres can access items that are not available locally, or those that are too expensive to buy locally. People who do not have the luxury of ADSL etc .. & bundled 50Gig deals from multiple Telco's to choose from.
It's not a matter of cost, it's a matter of availability!

And why is it that people think that everyone has perfect eyesight?

To me, having a Sellers PICK of the Day open with an adget showing a dozen little images with micro print is like turning a page in a paper /magazine & finding it full of classified ads .... I just turn to the next page.
If I want to look at all that you sell, I will look at your listings .....

This is why supermarkets have learned to use shotgun advertising in catalogues, but sniper advertising in their TV ads.

Until this thread - I didn't know that some didn't like the Adgets and I didn't know that people without Broadband had problems.

Originally when they first started - the Adgets were much bigger - and I thought it gave a little variety to look at when sellers had more than a few items - that was my take on it anyway.  Obviously I was wrong as usual.

I was doing a bit of browsing the other day and stumbled across some sellers who had feedback in the thousands.

I have never seen them in the fora or advertising in SPOTD. Their items were not specialised - they were selling crafts things, homewares, books, secondhand clothes, with reent and regular sales ... I looked at some of their buyers ... many were no or low feedback buyers and I couldn't recollect any of them from the fora either ...

... so perhaps ;being seen' in the quicksales fora is not all it's cracked up to be ... perhaps sellers would be wiser to give the chat and onsite advertising a miss and concentrate on listing ... ?

When I have been doing some SPOTD's - with the adgets - I was putting the link on Twitter to try and gain some outside people looking.

I thought that would be a fairly good use for them.  Will have to keep trying.

Listing - but postage part is still broken - even when I am changing it manually in each listing - the default is resetting it back again when the listing is completed - and pictures are not always working at the moment either.

Thanks EJ - but that postage is still wrong - only by 5c - which I can bear - but even when I change it manually it won't stick  - and the pictures in some is out.

Plenty of MacLeod's to go round lol

Harris or Lewis ??

 Interesting point, cezm.
One seller here who sellers something in my line of interest, I have never seen in the forums, yet they have huge feedback, and  look to be very successful.I think a lot of the people who have the largest feedback here don't spend time in the forums, and I haven't seen a lot of them use SPOTD either.
And no I'm not complaining about lack of sales, quite satisfied. And I can't  remember having seen any of my buyers post in the forums. Not to say they may not read them, but I do think we have to see maybe there is a bit more to it.

Ej ... I had a buyer who found me through a search ... bought a few items ... won a voucher ... and bought some more ... happy buyer and seller   ... but I'm not sure he'll stick around as there's not much in the way of that genre on quicksales ...
