Cheap things to do in Cairns?
Hi everyone.
We are thinking about a trip to Cairns.
We are looking for family (i have a 5 and a 1 year old) friendly things to do there.
They need to be as cheap and budget as possible and not to commerial (eg we dont want to do theme park type things)
Anyone live there or has been on hols and have any advice?
Thanks :)

Hi

Was there a couple of years ago.  Wonderful time.

On the Esplanade there is are parks and water/ fountains that the children can play on.  We went there a couple of times and the children loved it.  Our at the time were 4 and 2.

Also, if you are there in September there is the festival which has free activities.

Yes there is a nice park and water play area for the Kids on the Esplanade. take a walk through the casino too, it is the big dome building, At the top of it there is a bird or wildlife display. I didn't go into it but I saw it can't remember exactly what it was. if you have your car with you go up to Karanda, they have a market twice ? a week, not as good as it used to be but nice to browse through, hippy alternative style. Butterfly sanctuary there too and an Aboriginal dance place, gems displays too. good walk trails. or drive to Port Douglas sunday market at the marina near a posh hotel. forget the name now.
if you need to hire a car don't get it from the street where all the hire car companies are on, they are expensive.
walk along Spencer? st. about 2 klm near Cairns base hospital there is a car hire place there a lot cheaper then the big companies, that's where I normal hire a car from when I go there sorry can't remember the name. not far from crazy clarks but on the other side of the road. I hope that helps.

When you go to Port Douglas don't forget to take the kids to Breakfast with the BIrds which is the most fantastic place for birds, snakes and animals. (snakes are in a glass house). We went up the daintree which was beautiful

Heaps of things to do in Cairns for next to nothing. You can get a bus ticket for the day and travel up to Palm Cove and several of the other beaches (no swimming though - crocs and stingers), the Cairns Zoo is very reasonable, there is the water front and the wharf and of course Atherton Tablelands where you can visit the Forest Folk at the Yungaburra Craft Cottage, see platypus from the viewing platform, visit the giant fig trees, and then on to Kuranda where you can do the markets and the Barron Falls walk. The Botanical Gardens and the Cascades are free. Enjoy
