Can't log onto certain sites :(
Hi!

Yesterday I defragged my computer.  When it rebooted there were a couple of  automatic updates.  Now I can't log onto 2 certain sites, that I'm aware of anyway.

Paypal - I keep getting the site is unavailable message (but I checked the "is it just me" site and found paypal was o.k.)
Yahoo - I can load the home page, but can't get the sign on page to load.

I can log into my banking sites and lots of others, just the above 2 are causing problems.

I have cleared coookies and temp files heaps of times, rebooted etc etc.

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks in advance :)

USING XP and Firefox 10 (just checked, that must have updated)

I justed checked using IE and couldn't get in to them that way either!

maybe go to your security in control panel and allow these sites through the firewall?

Hmmm, just went there and the firewall was turned off, so that's not it.

btw I couldn't find anywhere to put urls of sites I want to access if the firewall was turned on.

Exactly where is that option, I've never had to go in there before?

Try the solutions for firefox here - http://kb.mozillazine.org/Website_login_fails
IE here - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/967897

Thanks for the links.  I deleted the stored site cookies relating to the offending sites, tried to log back on to make new cookies and it still won't work on either browser.

There must be something to fix it, because I did just manage to log in to my emails the once (just BEFORE I went to those fixit links), but I haven't got further than the paypal home page at all, but there are no graphics on it, just boxes and the words instead of pics.

Grrrrr

You could do a System Restore to a date prior to the update

or use

Microsoft Fix it Centre  ( free from the net)  it might pick up the issue and repair it.

I've already done a system restore, but I'll try the other suggestion. thanks

Don't forget to run virus scans.
Have you tried starting firefox in safe mode? Go to Help -> Restart with Add-ons Disabled...
It could be an add-on issue.

Have you tried creating a new firefox profile and seeing if you still have the issue or not?

Are you using any Ad blocking add-ons?

Ok., I've been through all those links and my head is spinning.  New profile made absolutely no difference.  It's strange because I can get into my email after a few tries.  The yahoo page actually loads straight up with all graphics as normal, but it's the sign on page that has no graphics, just blank  boxes and words next to them.  The paypal site is another matter, I can't get the home page to load at all, it just hangs, then the sign in page comes up with the blank boxes, but when I click the log in box, it just hangs and then says site is unavailable.

Are you using any Ad blocking add-ons?

I think I installed that over 12 months ago, but can't find out where to go to try and remove it.  It's never been a problem before though and as I said earlier, it's only the 2 sites I'm having any problems with, all the others load normally.

Where can I check to see if I have adblocker still?

Check that the windows host file hasn't extra entries added to it. A nasty may be using this file to block you from sites. Please refer to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972034 to see how to reset this file to the default values.
You may have a corrupt cookie storage file in firefox. Go to
Help -> Troubleshooting Information. On the page that appears, look for Application Basics, and click on the button "Open Containg Folder" next to profile Folder.
You'll want to delete the file called cookies.sqlite as well as any file that starts with cookie. Restart firefox to recreate the file. Test again. Have you checked your security software to see if it is handling cookies in any way?
Open a command prompt in windows. In Start -> Run type cmd and hit enter. If in Vista or 7, type cmd into the search bar, and wait until the icon appears. Right click and select "Run as Administrator. At the prompt when the window opens, what happens when you type ping yahoo.com (press enter after entering the command).

If that doesn't work, then a full scan for viruses and malware will be needed, as it appears that something is blocking these sites in both your browsers.
Have you tried rebooting your machine as well as your router?

Where can I check to see if I have adblocker still?

Under Tools -> Add-ons. You'll need to find its name on the list, and check the configuration. Make sure it isn't accidently blocking these sites.

I didn't have adblocker under the addons, so I must have got rid of that ages ago (I couldn't remember, lol)

HOWEVER,   after trying every one of the above suggestions, rebooting the computer after every attempt, turning off the modem etc., I just tried once more before giving up and taking my PC to a repairer, and lo and behold I could get into both sites first attempt, with the graphics showing as normal.

I have no idea what fixed it, but I'm just glad that it's now working as I wanted my PP money and couldn't get to it!

Another PP conspiracy theory, lol

Thanks everyone for your help!
