I think fingerless gloves were designed to keep at least part of your hands warm in cold weather but left fingers exposed if you were doing some sort of work requiring manual dexterity e.g. sewing.

I must admit to wearing one on my right hand at times when I'm on the computer for a long time and it's cold. It keeps the back of my hand a bit warmer but I can still feel the mouse properly with my fingers.

Dunno Lois, but were you smoking? I find the finger tips and nails feel the cold so much when outside in the cold. Marian

It would be a bit like when I pull my sleeves down over my knuckles for some warmth.  It leaves your fingers more able to do somethings that you could'nt do with gloves on.

A friend of mine who is a piano teacher always wears fingerless gloves during the winter as she says it basically keeps her hands warm but leaves to fingers free to play the piano. I must admit I have a pair that I use in cold weather when using to computer as I do have slight arthritis in my hands and it helps to keep them warm.
There are special ones for people who have problems with their hands that are made from fabric that retains body heat.
cheers

I used to wear them for work all the time and I'm a bit peeved that i have none now some days.

Mine were actually in an advertisment a few times. I had black ones with each finger a different fluero colour and they filmed us working for a series of ads. You could always tell my hands.

But yeah, normal gloves restrict the movement more and you can't pick smaller things up with gloved fingers. So when working in the cold the fingerless ones cover to around your knuckles so only the top end of your hands are cold, and they're normally moving so don't feel it so much, and if you do, you can warm your fingertips up really quickly by blowing on the or putting them in front of a heater briefly.

Well, I wouldn't use them in 2 degrees. lol  I think you would probably need a bit more than that.  But they're great if you need to use your fingers.  They keep MOST of your hand warm and a lot of times I find that the fingers actually get warm too. I wear woollen ones as wool is much warmer than acrylic.   But outside, it's full gloves for me!! 2 degrees?? I probably wouldn't even be outside rofl.  brrrrrrrrrr   you gotta be nutso!

I have been using fingerless gloves for a few years, as you can rug up with clothes, great for sitting at the computer saves on heating. Also in bed reading a book, hands don't freeze and can turn pages easy. They do work fantastic!

I use them all the time with work especially when I driving.  I have full grip with the fingers free.  Makes driving easy.

Hubby wears them every day when working his horses, keeps his hands (and fingers) warm but he can still hold the reins and 'feel' the horses mouth.

Lois, I guess you've gotta try it to see.  You know what they say "Don't knock it till you've tried it."

They would be useless for actually going out in the cold eg/ walking in winter but if doing something like typing in an office and they have the aircon blaring down on you in winter as they do then they would be very useful.
