Can anyone help with info on this necklace?
My daughter was given this necklace as a gift some years ago. She doesn't like it and has asked me to list it here. However, I have no idea what it is nor whether it is valuable. Can anyone enlightne me?

This is a closeup

The necklace is around 70cm long, has no clasp, and weighs 30g.

At that weight, it wouldn't be gemstones. When you bite the beads, do they feel like glass or plastic?

When I bite the beads they are VERY hard. But I guess that doesn't rule out them being glass perhaps?

Your necklace is Kambuka (my dads an avid rock hound) which is of the Jasper family and the other beads could be, white jade, or green onyx, or prehenite unless you were looking at the actual necklace it is a bit hard to tell, the only other gemstone your beads may be. although he thinks they are kambuka they could be Malachite, Malachitre is a lot brighter green than Kambuka, which ever they are they look like they have been sealed these have more the colour of Malachite but it is hard to say in a photo, I have never seen Malachite cut into squares, although Kambuka could be cut that way.

Although Jasper is a semi precious gemstone, it has very collectable pieces, and Kambuka is a very scarce Jasper and is mined in Madagascar.

Thank you for your very informative reply. I googled Kambuka but nothing came up. However, I did find some images of malachite, and it looks a lot greener than my cubic beads, and also it appears more 'striped' rather than blotches as in my beads. The history of this piece suggests it wasn't just junk jewellery (it was a 21st present I think). It resides in a Zamels box (don't know if this is original but I suspect it might be) so perhaps I will have to take it to them and ask if they can provide any info.

Silly old sod shouldn't mumble at people with a ciggty in his mouth grrrrr, you need to google kambaba Jasper.

Aha! That makes more sense. I googled the right name and interestingly, there were several in the cubic shape that mine are in.

So it looks like they really might be these stones. Now for further investigation of the possible value.

The original necklace questioned about is glass, not Kambaba Jasper. While it looks similar, Kambaba doesn't have that sheen, nor the "swirl" in the pattern - it is more spotty or patchy and the green is more grey than the glass beads. When you look at the two photos together it is clear which is the stone and which is the glass.

That many Kambaba beads would weigh more than 30gms.

I would be willing to wager on it.

Hi there!
Unless this is a very good fake the square stones are malachite. Malachite comes in varying shades of green from darker to lighter with characteristic swirls and wirls and it can also be striped. For genuine malachite study the malachite stones on offer in bracelets and earrings under gems-4u - they are from Zaire in Africa. The presentation case also lets me think the stones are genuine. The round stones could be what they call new jade. Hope this helps.

 Hi magnolia134

As a gemmologist I would advise looking at the stones carefully with a 10x jewellers eye glass. If you see a lot of bubbles in the material, it is glass plain and simple, and I doubt very much whether the items are Malachite.

From the photo, the items looks like a synthetically manufactured item

They are stated as being glass in my listing. If someone buys it and it turns out they're not glass, well, they've got a bargain.

Just as well, as they are definitely glass. As I said before, I would bet money on it.
