Anyone else had this after gallbladder removal?
Hi everyone,
I had my gallbladder removed 10 days ago and was recovering reasonably well. A couple of glitches with infection in 3 of the laparoscopy incisions and a chest infection but I thought I was getting better. Then today I had 3 episodes of excruciating pain in the stomach. Just as bad as the attacks I used to have prior to surgery. I hadn't eaten anything I shouldn't. Went up to the hospital and the doctor said I may have passed some sludge through the ducts. Has anyone else had this and how long did it last and what pain meds did you have? I can't take codeine. Thanks in advance for any replies.
Cheers Sylvia

Sylvia, is it possible to phone the surgeon who did the op?
Some of those hospital doctors are a bit dodgy.
I had mine out 8 months ago and have not experienced pain like you, although didnt get any infections either.
Get well soon! Marian

Hi Sylvia,  Sort of, yes.  I used to get bad pains in the chest and back (thought it was heart attack), then after having the gall bladder out (many years ago now), I do remember having another attack still, and thought 'how could this be'.  The specialist said 'possible air pocket movement'.  It only happened the once.  I've had no eating restrictions at all.
As you've had some infections, I'd be concerned.  Hope you're feeling better soon.

Yes I had some pain that would come and go for a few weeks after the op.  Not quite as bad as the GB pain...but still enough to give me a fright

Like you I am not able to take Codiene...get a script for some Digesic.  I take 1/2 a Digesic with 1 1/2 panadol...or if pain is bad...one Digesic, one Panadol....or if pain is really bad...take 2 Digesics.  I find they make me sleepy, so that's why I only take 1/2 most times.

It does eventually subside...and the fact you've had the infections means your body is still in the healing process and will take that little bit longer to heal.

Make sure you take a multi-vitamin and some extra vitamin C to help expedite the healing process ...and sit or go for a stroll in the Sun, for 20-30 minutes...as that also helps to heal the body.

Drink lot's of water

Get it checked out, it could be adhesions from the operation.

An adhesion is a band of scar tissue that binds 2 parts of your tissue together. They should remain separate.

Sphincter spasms are a fairly common problem after gall bladder removal. My freind who has the sphincter spasms wished she never had her gall bladder removed as they are far worse than the problems she had before.

Hubs had his GB out late august last year.  He has spent at one stage 2 weeks in hospital on pain management since the op.
Reasons docs looked for are"
Adhesions as mentioned above.
Infection.
Gall stones left in the bile duct.
Bile being blocked.
You can also get severe pain followed closely by the runs.  It generally come after finding you've eaten something that doesn't agree with you.

Hubs has said that this after surgery pain was worse than the original pain with the stones before it was removed.  I must say also that he was a typical bloke who said he had heartburn for months and months before it got so bad he finally admitted he was in trouble and I got him into an emergency dept at the local hospital.  Admitted straight away.  His gall bladder had gone bad and was gangreneous when they operated and took it out.

He still gets some pain now and again but nothing like it was in the months after the op.  They have not yet found a reason for these painfull attacks.  Generally he feels one coming one and takes an endone and heads for bed.

well, if you weren't suitably scared before you should be now lol.   Follow the doctor's advice.
